October 31st came and Charlotte had a haunted house. Allie worked in it the year before with a girl named Katelinn. I saw Katelinn when she got on the bus and she looked like a nice girl. I never really said anything to her, because I had Allie.
Then we became friends when Allie invited me to work in the haunted house with them. I invited Shyanne with. That was the best thing I had done. We weren't paid, or even hired. We just put Halloween makeup and fake blood on and hid in a certain room, waiting for people to come through.
We heard Katelinn, and a girl named Morgan in the room before us, they had just scared a few people walking through. We rushed into position and held perfectly still as they opened the creaky wooden door to our dimly black lit room. Shyanne and i were on a shelf which held two scarecrows. We held them on our laps, to cover our bodies. As they inched closer my heartbeat quickened. We both popped out and yelled. they screamed and hurried past. We had succeeded. The entire rest of the night was filled with laughs and many pictures.
The weekend after, we worked the haunted house again. This time it was Allie and I in the room with three boys our age. They were from Preston. Zach, Tyler Strait and Koty.
I remember liking Zach first. I imagined ripping his mask off and kissing him right there and then. He would be surprised, but in a good way. I never got the guts and later learned he had a girlfriend anyways.
Koty was nice. I likes his hair, it was longer, shaggy and his eyes were nice. He had a welcoming smile and he was so tall. He didn't like me, though. He wanted to be with Shyanne. He wasn't the only guy she took from me. She was simply better than me, but I didn't think about that too much. I just wanted to think about Tyler.
Tyler had a cute mouth. it curved up at the edges, even though he wasn't smiling. His eyes were kind and brown. I liked his energy. He was short, only a couple inches taller than me. How brown hair was always kept short. We all got each other's numbers. Tyler and I texted each other a lot. He would call me and tell me I was cute. I would hang out with him when I went to Shyanne's if he was in town. His grandma lived there, while he lived in Preston.
He asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes. He always wants to see me, too. I liked it, he wanted to be with me.
Katelinn and I had become quite good friends after Allie introduced me to her. We would hangout at her house and be funky together. She would sing sometimes and I had never heard a voice like hers. It was full but with an airy softness to it. I always told her she was a good singer, but she didn't believe me. We would dance around and message boys together.
One day, we organized a plan. Tyler and I, Shyanne and Koty, and Katelinn would go to the Paranormal Activity four movie that had just come out. It was the one with the little girl and Toby the other worldly creature in the house.
I was not a scary movie person. I was shaking at some points and Tyler held my hand tight. I remember him even jumping at some points. I found that so funny.
After the movie we all went to Walmart. We were walking by the hat section and I found a black fedora.
I picked it up, "Here Tyler, be fancy."
He smiled at me and put it on. "How do I look?" He twirled in a circle and did a jazzy dance.
I couldn't help but laugh as Koty, Shyanne and Katelinn caught up to us. Koty raised his eyebrows, "what are you wearing?"
I butted in, "it's called a fedora."
We all put on hats, eventually. we were just goofing around until Katelinn's mom took us all back to Shyanne's house.
I didn't kiss Tyler but two times before we broke up. He didn't contribute to my life. He wasn't a significant part of me, just an experiment.
Isn't that what life is? Every choice we make is an experiment. Every door we open is a mystery. It's all about what we do after the door opens and the choice is made. We either step through the door and accept whatever hits us, or we cower away and try not to open any doors. I will always open every door. It's how you learn to live and how you learn who you are.
