Allie came up to me one day and asked me a question. "Hey, remember that girl I called a bitch on the first day of school this year?"
I thought for a moment, "Oh, blonde?"
"Yeah, well her name is Whitney and she's actually pretty cool. She got into fights at her last school."
There were never any fights at Northeast. We were a calm and civil bunch.
Clinton was where Whitney had previously gone to school at. That town was all a bunch of crazy women and asshole men. There were even gangs there, gangs that killed people. Most of the people living in Clinton were people flocking in from Chicago.
There were never fights until a boy, transferred here from Clinton, Lukas Jacobsen. He had glasses and blonde hair. Allie was quite smitten with him. She would always walk by him in the halls and yell out, "Love you, Lukas!"
Lukas had a cast on one arm, broken wrist, I think. He was sitting across the room from me and one row in front of a boy, Austin Chapman. Austin said something to Lukas, that Lukas didn't like. Lukas stood up and punched him right in the face with his cast. All 50 kids in the room stopped and watched this spectacle. Austin jumped up and hit him back. Ms. Horst, the choir director, jumped between them and tried to stop the fight, but the boys were ruthless.
Dylan Moss decided to be a hero and jump in. He held Lukas off while Ms. Horst held off Austin. This was all in a matter of fifteen seconds.
Life happens fast. One thing you say can change an entire friendship. One evil push of a button could lead to a girl hating herself for the rest of her life. Then again that one thing you say, could create a friendship, that one button you push could save a life. It's all about which reins you pick up to guide your horse.
