"Mom said you have to do the dishes since I have practice this morning," Ben told me while I sat at the table silently, eating my morning oatmeal. I just nodded. There was no use in fighting it. "Are you going to Ester's?"

"Yeah, at like noon," I told him.

"If you do the dishes, I'll drive you when you're done."

"What time is your practice?"

"It starts at 9, but I should be out by eleven. I'm going to Ester's too, so we might as well ride together," he explained, and I nodded. It was a bit weird having a friend who my brother also knew... not that he was going to Ester's on a Saturday to watch chick flicks like I was, but the thought of us hanging out in the same house together kind of freaked me out. "And do me a favor, Honey."

"What?" I frowned, not ready for whatever other stupid chore was about to be thrown on my plate when Ben was perfectly capable.

"Don't fuck David."

"What?" I spluttered, spitting a huge gulp of cranberry juice back into the cup.

"He told me he thought you were pretty, and I'm just warning you. He's going to hurt your feelings," he shrugged casually, like this wasn't an entirely weird conversation topic for the two of us. Ben and I barely even talked about our friends or our social lives together, much less my non-existent love life.

"I have no intentions of even talking to David. Men ain't shit, remember?" I reminded him of my catchphrase with a slight laugh. My mom told me she was sure I was born with a man-hating gene, since I had such a hard time trusting that any of them had good intentions. I was certain she was getting the idea that I was gay, which wasn't true. I just didn't really believe it was possible that men could be both committed and happy, which scared the shit out of me.

"Stay like that until you're out of college. You need it."

"My oatmeal is cold now," I told him, urging him to just leave me alone.

"Maybe if you had more than one brain cell, you could multitask," he flicked me on the ear, and I held up my middle finger.

"Honey Vanilla Johnson, no ma'am," my mother scolded me as she entered the kitchen. I cringed at my full name, which couldn't be more cheesy if she tried. How did they have a whole son named Benjamin Allen Johnson and then pass off a name like Honey Vanilla to me? I always wondered if my parents were on some type of drugs when I was born; it was truly the only logical explanation.

My mom always told me she saw my blonde hair and wanted to call me Honey, but "normal" middle names didn't sound right with it. I always told her I thought Honey Elizabeth sounded just fine, and she always told me that I could name my daughter that if I so desired.

"Sorry," I mumbled, finishing up my cold oatmeal and rinsing the bowl and spoon in the sink. "I'm going to shower before I do the dishes."

"As long as they're done before you leave. Are you sleeping over at Ester's?" she asked with an almost excited smile. I knew she was proud that I finally made some type of friend. She hadn't met Ester yet, but the second I mentioned a girl's name, her ears perked up like a puppy. She was happy for me, and it was sweet. Annoying, but sweet.

"I'm not sure. If I am, I think she'd be fine driving me back home tomorrow morning. I'll just text you."

"Don't forget that I have Life360, dear," she smiled, a total suspicious mom smile, then exited the kitchen.

"Don't forget that I have Life360, dear," Ben and I mocked at the same time with ridiculous looks on our faces. We both laughed at our similar minds, especially when it came to my mother's craziness, and then I left to go get ready.

By the time I had showered, gotten dressed, put on makeup, did the dishes, and did a little bit of homework, Ben was home and we were getting ready to leave.

"Be good, kids," my mom reminded us as we left.

"No drinking, no drugs, no sex," my dad, always the blunt one, yelled before Ben shut the door with a sigh of relief.

"They're fucking batshit crazy."

"I'm well aware," I replied, climbing into his truck that he was oh so proud of. It was parked right next to my little white Hyundai that I was too scared to drive. After our cousin Ella broke her femur and almost died in a car accident, I was hesitant to get behind the wheel. Ella wasn't much older than us, and I didn't want to take any chances. "Are you hanging out with just David, or are other people coming to?"

"Todd, Zane, and Corinna are coming," he replied, which only made me cringe. I was never good around a lot of people, and I just hoped that Ester would take me to her room or the basement and I wouldn't be forced to interact.

That was the scope of our entire conversation. Ben turned the music on as soon as he got a chance, and we made the ride in silence, besides his tone deaf self humming along to Pink Floyd.

When we got to the Dobrik residence, I sighed in relief and climbed out of the car, following Ben up the front steps and waiting beside him as he rang the doorbell. David answered the door, smiled at Ben, then his eyes landed on me. His eyebrows furrowed as he said, "Did Ester not text you?"

"I haven't checked my phone this morning," I told him, pulling it out of my pocket to see two texts from Ester.

Ester Dobrik: I'm literally so sorry but my mom very last minute decided to go out of town for the weekend to visit my grandma and I went with her, so I have to cancel today

Ester Dobrik: Next weekend we'll definitely do something!! I'm so sorry!!

"Oh," I frowned, placing my phone back in my pocket.

"It's chill. You can hang out with us," David told me, and turned around to enter the house before he could take no for an answer. I glanced up at Ben, who only shrugged and followed after him.

I was convinced he didn't want to deal with driving me back, and I wasn't about to beg him in front of everyone and look like even more of a loser, so with a nervous breath, I shut the front door behind me and joined the group.
