"Do you need any help packing, Honeybear?" my dad stood in the doorway, watching me struggle to zip my way too full suitcase. I turned, jumping onto the suitcase and looking at him.
"Come zip it, please. You waited until I was done to ask me to help, so I'm mad at you," I informed him, watching him laugh as he approached and helped me zip the suitcase shut. "You think it's under fifty pounds?"
"I'll give you money in case it's over," he told me, picking me up off the suitcase easily and setting me down on the floor. "What am I gonna do without my favorite daughter here?"
"Favorite child," I corrected him with a cheesy smile. "You can admit it. I won't tell Ben."
"Ben already knows," Dad joked, and I smiled even wider. I already knew I was the favorite, but hearing him say it always turned my frown upside down. "I might kill your brother without you here."
"Oh, no," I sarcastically frowned. "So sad. RIP Ben."
"Honey, you love your brother," my dad weirdly sidehugged me. "I'll bring this downstairs for you."
"Thank you," I giggled, watching him take it away with a smirk. I was just glad I didn't have to slide that suitcase down the stairs and hope for the best. I was leaving at six thirty the next morning to meet the Dobriks at their house so we could head to the airport. It would be my first time on a plane ever, and I was extremely nervous. I needed a long nights sleep and possibly one of my mom's Xanaxs to get through it.
After considering myself fully packed, I took off my makeup and tied my hair into a braid down my back so it wouldn't be in the way. I briefly texted Ester about her third date with Brandon that night, which she was going to explain in full detail on the plane. I was still a little offput by Brandon; he seemed a bit odd. She liked him, though, and I guess that's all that matters.
I went to bed pretty early thanks to two melatonin gummies, and woke up excited and scared the next morning. After getting ready enough (changing my hair from a braid to a ponytail and putting on clean leggings and a t-shirt), Ben drove me to the Dobriks, and trust me, he was not happy about it.
"If you don't start fucking driving soon, I'm offing myself," he complained for approximately the one hundred and tenth time. "How the hell am I up at 6:30 on a Sunday? This is inhumane. This is a crime against humanity."
"Maybe if you didn't complain so much, you'd enjoy the fresh air and the sunrise," I proposed, solely to piss him off. Neither of us were morning people, and I just wanted him to be quiet.
"Maybe if you weren't such a pussy, you could drive yourself places."
"Okay, Ben," I sighed, just letting him have it. Luckily, letting him worked. He stayed quiet for the rest of the ride, allowing me to freak out about being on a plane in a few hours in peace. It was still dark out when I made it to Ester's, but she was still sitting on the front porch hugging a pillow with a smile on her face. She jumped up as soon as the car pulled into the driveway and ran up to open my door, quite literally yanking me out of the car.
"Honey! Are you excited? I'm so excited!" she grinned, and even though her energy should've been contagious, it was too early and I was too tired.
I stared at her for a second, then Ben said, "She's not much of a morning person."
"He's right," I told her, giggling when she sadly nodded like it broke her little heart. "I'll be much more excited in a couple of hours."
That's when David came out, carrying two girly, floral duffle bags over his shoulders. I commented, "Nice bags."
"Shut up," he rolled his eyes, but I saw his little smirk like he didn't truly mean it.
"Hey," Ben got out of the car and did a little bro hug with David. "Take care of my sister, man. Don't let some Floridian clown mess with her."
"Yeah, I'll keep my eye on her," he said it so casually that I almost didn't realize what he meant by it. My eyes nearly bulged out of my head when I finally understood that it was me that he was talking about with my own brother, but if Ben understood, he didn't say anything about it. "Where's your bags, Honey?"
"Just one. The trunk," I told him with a smile. "Thank you, David."
"You're so much nicer to David," Ester whined.
"David's not my friend," I informed her. I was only halfway lying. "I have to be nice to him."
"True," she sighed, shuffling over to the car and sliding into the backseat. "I'm putting headphones in, if you aren't going to talk."
"You can put them in," I told her, not in a mean way. It was just much too early for me to be thinking about how to have a meaningful conversation with someone.
She turned her back, sliding in her Airpods and officially becoming as dead to the world as I was. Ben hugged me, weirdly, and then he left me standing in the driveway. I waited for a few minutes alone, wanting to talk to David a little before his mom or Ester saw us, and basically froze to death in my not-as-warm-as-I-originally-planned outfit.
"Get in the car, dum dum. You'll get sick," David carried out a cooler and added it to the growing pile of bags in the trunk. "I'll sit by you on the plane."
"You know you can't," I told him in a low voice, trying not to attract Ester's attention. She seemed much too busy on her phone. "You're gonna get us in trouble."
"You're the one standing outside like a freak waiting to talk to me. If we get in trouble, it's on you."
While I was about seventy eight percent sure he didn't mean it in a mean way, it still felt mean. He was good at being mean.
"You don't have to be rude," I crossed my arms over my chest with a sigh.
"How is that rude? It's true!" he defended himself, which only made me sadder and more frustrated. "Okay, not a freak. I'm sorry I called you a freak. That was rude."
"You just said it was true," I countered, unable to accept his apology and let him get away with it. "Which is it?"
"Honey..." he sighed like he was physically exhausted by my presence. "I didn't mean to offend you."
"Yeah, well, you did," I gave him a fake smile and went to join his sister in the car.
The vacation hadn't even started, and it was already ruined.
