The train ride to Hogwarts was filled with anticipation.

Lily sat with Mary, Marlene and Alice and they talked about the things they wanted to do that year. About half way through, the door once again slid open.

'Hey, Evans, good holiday?' He ran a hand through his hair.
'No, I will not go out with you.'
'Oh, so, no fresh perspective then?'
'Nope. You're still you.'
'Oh, um, ok, see you later.'

The door slid shut.
'Lily, that was horrible,' said Alice.
'He's horrible.'
'You know what? I think that you were just meaner to him than he's been to everyone else put together. He hasn't even been mean to you.'

'What? But... he... I... he pestered me unrelentlessly all of last year.'
'Because he really likes you.'
'Bu... No... because... Now you're being mean to me.'
'No, I'm not. I'm telling you the truth.'
'So mean.'

Remus sat with his three friends on the train, playing exploding snap.

He was begining to wonder if perhaps he had been wrong. He couldn't imagine any of them turning against him because he was a werewolf. They were some of the most accepting people he had ever met.

It wasn't as if their pranks targeted a specific group of people. Okay, maybe they did target Slytherins a little more than everyone else, but that was different. That was just house rivalry and the Slytherins they targeted were generally not nice people.

Remus tried to set boundaries as to how cruel their pranks could be, but honestly he quite enjoyed the annoyance or sometimes even anger of the victim. He found it almost as funny as the others did, he was just good at hiding it. Especially when it was Filch. Those were the best pranks.

Sirius looked tired. Remus supposed that his family had given him a hard time all holiday.

Sirius had said not to write, in case his family found the letters. Remus would find another way to help his friend next summer.

As soon as Sirius and James had pulled off their first prank of the year (hiding cornish pixies from the DADA classroom in Filch's storage cupboard), Sirius felt instantly better.

It was nearly a year before he had to face his family again.

He was with James, his amazing best friend, and they were going to have an amazing school year together.

He was with Remus, his gorgeous crush, who had no idea about what Sirius was feeling so he would have another amazing year of staring at Remus without doing anything about it.

And Peter was there, too, gazing at them in awe.

Nothing would ruin this.

One evening, he looked over at Remus, who was doing homework by the common room fireplace, and did a double take. Remus looked pale and sick, which Sirius was sure he hadn't five minutes ago.

'Remus, are you alright?'
'Hmm? Oh, yes, I'm fine.'
'Sure? You don't look good.'
'Thanks, Sirius.'
'No, I mean it. Maybe you should go to Madam Pomphrey.'

'Oh, erm, maybe you're right,' he began stuffing things back into his bag, 'Don't wait up, I might have to stay overnight.'
'I'll come with you.'
'No, Sirius, don't worry. I can get there on my own.'

Before Sirius could argue, Remus had left the portrait hole. Sirius looked out after him. Instead of going right, to the infirmary, Remus was going downstairs, to the door outside.

Sirius crept down after him, following him out of the door.

Closing it behind him, Sirius looked round for his friend down the green slope of the Hogwarts grounds through the wind.
