The train was nearly at Hogwarts, and Lily was walking towards the prefect's compartment at the end of the carriage.

She wasn't just any old prefect this year though. She was Head Girl. She wondered who the Head Boy was. Maybe it was Remus. It seemed quite likely.
She came through the compartment door and immediately bumped into someone.

'Oh, sorry,' she blurted.
'It's fine.'
Her eyes darkened as she looked up into the face of James Potter.

'What are you doing in the prefect's compartment?'
He turned bright red at her tone and expression. Potter blushing? It was actually quite cute. The red shade of his cheeks.

Woah! Back up. James Potter, cute? Lily thought not. She brushed away the notion, pretending it had never been there.

'Err, well, it was a bit of a suprise to me too, but, um...'
He pointed out a shiny badge on his uniform, which she noticed was much neater than it had ever been before.

'You're Head Boy? How?'
'No idea.'
Lily groaned as she realised how much time they would have to spend together.

He turned even more red at that, 'Um, if it makes you feel any better, I promise not to ask you out every time I see you.'
Lily frowned, puzzled, 'That does help, James, thank you.'

He raised his eyebrows, 'It's James now, huh?'
'Well, we'll be seeing a lot of each other.'

At this he couldn't suppress his grin.
She rolled her eyes and pushed past him in to the compartment.

Each evening they patrolled the corridors of the castle, catching people out after hours, or people snogging in empty classrooms.

James was true to his word. He hadn't asked her out once all year. This helped Lily greatly, in working with him, and respecting him.

For him, it was nice to just talk to her, and get to know her properly. Which actually only made him fall a little more deeply in love.

'Ok,' smiled Professor Flitwick, 'Today, we shall be attempting the patronus charm.'
Lily grinned. She already had this covered.

Flitwick explained the spell and told them what they had to think about.
They all spread around the classroom wands at the ready. As soon as Flitwick gave the all clear, she raised her wand and called, 'Expecto Patronum', along with everyone else in the class. Only a few actually produced one though.

Her doe soared around the room and many people stared and gasped at it's beauty.
Lily had lots of fun watching Marlene, Alice and Mary attempting the spell and seeing Sirius and Peter producing patronus' with ease was a slightly odd experience. Remus clearly had already known how but apart from that no one seemed able to produce one.

James seemed to be holding back for some reason. He would presumably know how to if his friends did, but he hadn't even tried all lesson.

He was staring at her, and this wasn't unusual, but this time, instead of just obsessed and annoying, he looked curious and thoughtful

One evening, a week before the first Hogsmeade trip of the year, Lily was having a conversation with James about Sirius and Remus' relationship, and she watched him laugh, and smile at her comments and add his own, which she found hysterical, but she would never admit that.

She realised that James was incredibly easy to get along with and extremely smart, despite all the overdue homeworks.

And whilst he was talking, she realised something else. It was obvious that he was in love with her. How she hadn't seen it before, evaded her. In the way he looked at her; in the way he smiled at her.
