On the platform Lily could see Mary and Alice. She hurried over and Marlene soon joined them. They hugged and began talking about their holidays.

Then, the four marauders walked over, James looking at her and running a hand through his hair. On their way, they gave a first year a questionable sweet, and tripped over a second year.

Lily despaired. How could Remus let them do that?

Then she saw Severus walking over from the other direction. This wasn't going to go well.

'Hello, Evans. Oh, hey, Snivelly.'
'Potter,' grunted Severus.
Lily turned on James, 'Help that second year up.'
'Why?'
'Because he's struggling with his books.'
'I know it's hilarious.'
'It's cruel.'
'We're just messing around.'
'It's hurting people.'
'He's fine.'
'He's embarrassed and humiliated.'
'No, he's... Evans, you make me feel bad about myself.'
'Good. Nice holiday, Severus?'
'Yep. You?'
'Exellent. Mary? Marlene? Alice? Want to get a compartment.'
'Course,' smiled Marlene.

The four girls walked onto the train whilst Potter and Severus had a long staring match. She had no idea who won and she didn't really care.

This year, James wanted to get on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He was a good flyer so it couldn't be that hard.

Tryouts were on a rainy afternoon near the very begining of September. As far as he could tell, the position he was best at was chaser. And three people were needed, so he had a good chance.

When it was his turn, he rose into the air and looked for whoever had the quaffle. Once he had spotted it, he flew forward until he was alongside the girl who had it, and blocked her from passing to anyone on her team.

She tried to make a pass, but James intercepted it, grabbing the quaffle and flashing towards the hoops. He took a shot, and the keeper missed it by a few seconds. It sailed through the top hoop and James turned to see the captain smiling at him. He smiled back.

Once he was back on the ground, after a few more hoops, there were several more trials for chaser before the captain told him that he was on the team.

He looked at the stands to see Sirius, Remus and Peter clapping wildly. James grinned.

He would have to tell Lily.

'Evening, Evans,' smiled Potter, waltzing into the common room, rustling his hair as usual.
'Evening, Potter.'

'Guess who one of your new Gryffindor chasers is.'
'Congratulations,' she raised her eyebrows.
'Why, thank you. Would you by any chance like to go on a celebratory date with me?'
'Not in the slightest.'
'C'mon, if that doesn't impress you, what will?'
'Oh, it impresses me. I just don't like you.'

Potter sighed, 'I know.'
'Why are you still asking me, then?'
'Hope.'
She rolled her eyes.

It was year number three, and Remus had still displayed no signs of any interest. Sirius now resigned to simply admire from afar. No one ever needed to know.

They were in the boy's dormitory getting ready for bed. Sirius looked round his bed to see Remus pulling on his pajama top. He caught a glimpse of a skinny torso, and Sirius could have sworn that he had seen a slash across his back.

Sirius blushed and looked away.
He had always wondered where Remus got his scar from, but he imagined that it was a sensitive subject, so he had left the matter alone.

'Remus?'
'Yes?'
'Can I ask about your scar?'

Remus froze.
'If you don't want to say, then that's fi-'
'It's from the night I became a werewolf.'
Sirius paused, 'Oh. Sorry, we don't have to talk about it.'
