in every way that counts

I met Aria only briefly at the orphanage, she was the newest addition to our family, but she wouldn't stop crying so I ignored her for the most part.

All hell broke lose when the rebels took over the government and our orphanage lost all funding. Our caretakers were already struggling to care for us and soon they too abandoned ship.

That night I found Aria sitting on the rooftop, gazing up at the stars above - oblivious to the chaos that whirled around her. Her dark hair blended perfectly into the darkness of the nightsky.

I remember my little brow scrunching together in confusion at the sight. It hadn't been too long ago that I had done the same with my father, but he was gone now and the stars offered no apologies.

The years that followed were a blur, our mutual desire to survive fueled an unbreakable bond that neither of us had expected.

As two young females in an unforgiving world we learnt to keep our hair short and heads down to avoid unwanted attention. When you're any orphan most attention is unwanted.

Aria unsurprisingly grew to be the stronger of the two of us, her strong build and agility meant that when the situation arose she would fight tooth and nail to get us out in one piece.

I, on the other hand, was more reserved and less inclined to partake in confrontation. Instead I would observe, utilising my harmless appearance to listen in on conversations, gleening information that would later be sold to the highest bidder.

I kept us fed but Aria kept us alive. We were sisters, in every way that mattered at least.

If this were a normal story, Aria would most certainly have been the heroine, her skill with weapons and outgoing personality are a testament to the fact.

In a normal story I would be the side kick - if I was lucky. If not I might've gotten a brief mention at the start before disappearing from the pages for the rest of the novel.

But this is no ordinary story and I am no hero.
