I surveyed the endless expanse of steel and neon lights below, their blaring colours beamed up at me, radiating an obnoxious glow that melted into my irises.
I turned away, blinking a couple of times to clear my vision. A phantom wind brushed across my cheek and my attention was drawn towards my target.
Before me were the soldiers' barracks and beyond them the giant steel box known only as The Company - at least that's what the soldiers called it between hushed whispers when they thought no one was listening.
They should have known better; in a city like this someone was always listening.
And that someone was generally me - or one of my many shadows.
The design of The Companys' building was quite minimalistic and, to be frank, an eyesore. It loomed menacingly over the surrounding training boxes. The black paint of the walls seemed to swallow up an hint of colour into a pitiless oblivion.
The layout of the encampment itself was designed to confuse, a maze of dead ends and repetitive buildings it was meant to send most anyone insane - perhaps even the soldiers who resided there. The constant video surveillance made it particularly tricky to navigate without detection. It was for this reason that I'd only ever explored the outskirts, never having the confidence nor the tech to fully launch myself into its depths and uncover its secrets.
You see, over the years whilst Aria gained a reputation as a street fighter, I built an extensive network of spies with the goal of causing as much chaos and mayhem as I could muster. And now The Company, for the first time in years, was accepting new cadets into their "program". For me this meant an opportunity for intel beyond my wildest dreams, for Aria it meant she could finally receive professional combat training.
I smiled bitterly, the risks involved were incredibly high, but if we ever wanted to escape this sorry excuse of a city then we'd need more than street smarts.
The lights around me slowly flickered out into solemn submission as the twin moons reclaimed their rightful places in the sky above.
And so I waited.
