A burst  of light erupted directly in front of me, searing my eyes down to their sockets and altogether blurring my vision. I squeezed my eyes together in a futile attempt to clear away the haze. I stumbled forward, a sudden blast from a ray gun sent my startled figure lurching onward, heart hammering in my chest.

The brilliant white light poured down on us from the enemies ships, the silhouettes of our feeble bodies so small and helpless against its all seeing gaze.

We needed to take cover - but where? This planet had little vegetation to begin with, we'd taken a risk charging the enemy like this - but what choice did we have? They'd cornered us, pushed us up against the cliffs, separating us from our ship - and with it any chance of escape.

The metallic surface of my ray gun was cold beneath my fingertips. I tightened my grasp of the handle, assessing the situation.

Our enemy was smart, they'd taken advantage of our inexperience, luring us out into the open like this. I shook my head angrily; we'd been too predictable, too easily read and manipulated.

We needed to out smart them. Take what made us predictable and use it to our advantage.

A plan was hastily forming in my mind.

Reaching for my earpiece I sent a message through to Ari who relayed it to the rest of our squadron.

Everyone fanned out, allowing themselves to be pushed back further and further.

I stayed put, staring down the oncoming threat.

The enemy took no notice of the small girl before them. Instead they let out gleeful cries, leaping from their ship to claim a supposedly easy victory.

Then I threw back my head and bellowed at the top of my lungs.

They didn't predict that.

Nor what I was about to do next.
