After scrubbing myself clean like that will change who I am I make my way back to my room to put on clothing. I throw on whatever I can, leggings and a gray top. I don’t dress to impress anyone, because I honestly never leave my house.
I walk downstairs, to my kitchen and look in the fridge. It’s basically empty, a few things left remaining on the white shelves. I take the orange juice in a pour a glass. I don’t enjoy orange juice, it’s bitter and stings my mouth as I sip on it, but there’s not really anything else to drink.
The milk expired a few days ago, and I almost gagged as I drained it down the sink.
There’s a few granola bars left in the cupboard and some packs of noodles. Maybe I’ll make those for supper. We don’t have any tomato sauce though, so I’ll have to walk to the store and get that. I guess I can also pick up milk while I’m there.
I really hate leaving the house, but I guess it’s necessary now that we’re almost completely out of food.
I throw a sweater on and tie up my sneakers, grabbing my wallet on the way out.
I don’t have a car yet so I have to walk most places I want to go, or if it’s cold I take the bus.
I step out the door and lock it behind me.
I stroll out the door, and glance at my neighbors before pausing in my steps.
There’s a moving truck in my next door neighbor’s driveway. There’s muscly movers carrying a gray couch into the house.
Huh? I didn’t even know the neighbors were moving out. That shows how much I notice things.
It doesn’t really matter that much to me though, I mean my old neighbor was a couple who were retired and didn’t really do much. They were nice though, the lady always baked things and brought them over and the man sometimes had conversations with me if I walked by while he was mowing the lawn. Sometimes he mowed our lawn too.
I continue walking down the driveway before hearing a loud bang and someone cursing loudly. I turn around quickly, and see a boy kneeling on the driveway, a mess of books and papers surrounding him.
I sigh, thinking I could keep going or I could meet this person and make a good impression.
I walk back up the driveway, and cross over to theirs before kneeling down and picking up a few books and spare paper.
I walk over to the guy and hand the paper to him.
He looks up and smiles slightly.
“Thanks.” He says, taking the papers from my hands.
“No problem.” I respond quietly, kneeling down again and collecting more papers.
“You don’t need to do this.” He says, shaking his head and looking at me. His voice is deep and his eyes are blue, and for a second I am mesmerized by his appearance.
He’s really attractive, and I glanced down, embarrassed by my attire and the fact that I wasn’t wearing any makeup.
“It’s fine. Quicker this way isn’t it?” I laugh lightly as I continue picking up books and paper and making them into a pile.
He simply nods and continues picking everything up.
Soon the entire driveway has been rid of the mess that was put there in the first place, and I stand up smoothing down my leggings.
“Thanks again.” He mumbles as he rises from the ground. My eyes widen as I realize how tall he is. I have to crane my neck to look at him properly, and his shoulders are really broad, which I didn’t notice at first glance.
“Don’t worry about it.” I mumble back, glancing at the ground and wondering if I should leave.
“I’m Luke.” He blurts out after a few moments of silence. I look back up at him and smile before introducing myself.
“I’m Sophie.” I scratch my arm, god I’m awkward.
He runs his fingers through his hair and laughs. “It’s nice to meet you then, Sophie.”
I smile shyly. “Yeah.”
“So I guess we’re going to be seeing quite a bit of each other?” He asks.
I look at him questioning, not understanding what he was saying.
“You know, since I live next door now?” He mumbles sheepishly.
“Oh, right!” My cheeks flush in embarrassment. “I’m sorry, I’m dumb sometimes.” I laugh slightly, and Luke cracks a smile.
“Well, I guess I better go inside and help my mom carry in the rest of the stuff then.” He trails off awkwardly at the end of his sentence.
“Oh, yeah. I’ve got to go to the grocery store anyway. It was nice meeting you though.” I blush and start walking away.
“Wait.” He calls.
I turn around to face him again, raising an eyebrow.
“Do you, um, maybe want to hang out later, like after you go shopping and I finish unpacking?” He raises his hand to scratch the back of his neck, and I laugh awkwardly.
This has actually never happened before, so I’m not completely sure on how I’m supposed to answer.
“Uh, uh, yeah sure. T-that would be cool.” I stutter, and mentally slap myself for sounding so surprised.
“Okay.” He smirks. “I’ll just ring your doorbell when I’m done.”
I nod in response and walk away again, smiling to myself. Maybe this could be a good thing.
