The years went by and the curse was seemed forgotten and thrown in a deep pit. Prince Tsukihiko was known to be a good prince. He pleased his parents greatly. An outstanding student, a handsome face and a well-mannered child. The royal couple was filled with joy whenever they looked at the young child.
It was a happy family, a happy government and happy 6 years of being a family. Nothing spoiled it for them. Until it was the time to teach Tsukihiko to learn how to fight.
Tsukihiko was a fast learner. There is nothing he couldn't grasp within the day. He always brought satisfaction to his parents until he fell down while holding the wooden sword.
The royal couple went worried. They cannot even take it to look at the child who suddenly got sick. Prince Tsukihiko never got sick. Not this much.
Empress Hoshiko stayed outside the prince's room as the doctors tried to know what got him. As one of them got out of the room she ran to the doctor to ask what was wrong.
"Your Majesties... The prince is pretty much alright. He didn't have a life threatening illness. He's just having a fever. A high one. I cannot really decipher how a kid as young as six have this. Another thing I noticed was how easily he got sick." The doctor reported.
"Can we do anything about it doctor? Can he avoid getting sick the next time? How can we get him to feel better?" Empress Hoshiko asked in a worried tone.
"I left some prescription to his nurse. That will be useful." He said and left. The emperor and empress went in Tsukihiko's room and saw him weakly on the futon.
The nurse greeted them and they proceeded do sit beside their ill child.
"Tsukihiko... My son... My pitiful son. Are you feeling any better?" Empress Hoshiko asked smoothing the hair of her only son."M... Mother? Why did I fall down earlier? What's wrong with me?" He asked weakly. He was pale but his lips had become paler than the usual red.
"Oh son you were just sick. We can always continue your training when you get better. But for now, please try to get better." She told prince Tsukihiko.
"Father.... Are you disappointed about what happened?" Tsukihiko asked his father who was really silent.
"No my son. Why would I be ever disappointed of you? I'm very proud of you ever since your mother gave birth to you." Emperor Tsukihito assured him.
Prince Tsukihiko smiled at his father and was told to rest until he was better. An enraged Empress Hoshiko asked for Doctor Tsuyun again. She was the one who was disappointed at this servant.
When he was already in front of her she slapped him.
"I told you to make medicines and supplements that will make my son a strong prince! You are a disappointment to me!" Empress Hoshiko was beyond mad at what happened."I ask for your mercy my queen. I've been working tirelessly to make new supplements for the prince but it seemed like it doesn't work on him anymore." The doctor bowed and asked fo forgiveness.
Empress Hoshiko's pov:
I was so mad at this useless doctor. I wanted a strong and healthy son that will succeed his father on the throne.
"I've received a letter from a different doctor. Fortunately this doctor is more talented and more efficient than you could ever be. Prove to me that you can be useful. Treat my son in the best of your ability and I will not kick you as a royal physician." I declared, he bowed and went out.
I really was never up to this kind of luxury. I was used to having a simple life until my parents sold me off to be one of the girls in the king's harem.
Until I was chosen to be one of the concubines. I really didn't like the fact that I'd be touched and made love to by someone I didn't even know. But Tsukihito was a good person.
The emperor was kind and generous. Unlike the many stories I heard about him he wasn't any of it. I fell in love with the king as the day of courtship started and went on for 5 years. They said I was a proud woman as I let the courtship last that long and made the king wait.
But it was alright with him. We got married. I was happy with a man I love. Until a sage's foresight destroyed my peace of mind.
I could remember it as clear as day.
"The Empress will give birth to a prince and this prince will be a great one and the king's favored successor. But... Upon reaching his 6th birthday he will fall ill and it'll be a start of the destruction of this reign."
I was scared. I wish it was just a wrong premonition. But ever since the banquet 6 years ago I cannot stop thinking about a solution that will ensure that my life and my son's will be safe.
Once this little secret of mine reaches the emperor I know it'll be game over for the both of us.
I decided to ask for the new doctor's opinion. Doctor Wen. He was just better than Tsuyun.
"Your Majesty... I might not be the prince's doctor but there is this experimental medicine that might be the answer to your problems." Dr. Wen said and presented me a flower.
"What does it do?" I asked taking the fragile flower in my hands.
"It is a flower used to cure different illnesses. But to see if this works, I need to see the prince." I smiled."Alright... Check him up." I said and he went in the prince's room. It's been 5 days and he's not cured yet.
Dr. Wen checked him up and after a while he had a result.
"This is really a unique illness. I'll do my best to cure him." He said and left, he left to make a medicine.Months has passed this time and yet... No sign of my son being better. His temperature fluctuates every day. His body getting weaker. He won't eat much. All he asks for is the best food brought in the palace.
And all he eats is enough. He just can't get better. I prayed so much to the gods to make him better but he didn't.
I sighed. The emperor also felt burdened for not having a suitable heir for the throne. Tsukihiko isn't well enough to be his successor, so he is looking at one of his bastards to inherit my son's throne. I declined.
"Why would you give your throne that's supposed to be inherited by your son? That bastard isn't a wise choice!" I bellowed.
"Watch your tongue. Prince Tsukito is still a prince and my son. He is still a direct successor." Tsukihito told me coldly.
It's been 21 years since he met me and maybe that new concubine of his is getting the idea into his head.
"I get it... Your new concubine wants that bastard of hers on the throne. While I was the one who toiled and miserably waiting for my son to get better." I cried. The emperor looked at me.
"Hoshiko... I never said anything. Yume and Tsukito are also my family. Tsukito is my son, Tsukihiko's little brother. Not a thing had changed between us three. I'm only worried for the throne when I'm gone." He explained."I'm looking for a solution. So please your Majesty... Give me a bit more time. Or at least... Let me carry another successor. I won't let Tsukito in the line of succession." I was mad.
"Hoshiko... Alright. I will set a date for the consummation." Tsukihito gave up.
I need to be strong. I need to do it for my son.
END OF HAPPINESS AND TRAGEDIES...
