(Sorry about the late release. I know I said 1:00 this afternoon, and it's 2:00, but I got distracted. Sorry about that...on with the story...)
A tear fell from my eye as I tried to speak. "Dad?"
I couldn't see what was happening behind me, but I heard everyone start to squirm in their chairs. My father's breathy voice started to speak again. "John Kellen Smith, I'm very disappointing in you. You had a baby, and you're getting married, and you didn't even bother to tell me?"
How the hell did he know all that? He was locked up in a prison, there was no way he could have learned any of that. It had to be a dream. "H-how... Who told you that?" I asked. I was really scared.
"No one." He paused, and I was about to ask another question before he spoke again. "Don't you ask 'How then?' lovely. You know how. Didn't think I'd stay caged up that long, now did you?"
I could barely breathe. I felt my lungs tighten. I wanted to ask how again, but knew I couldn't. How could he possibly get free? This had to have been a dream. The only words that played in my head were, 'He escaped, he escaped.'
I opened my mouth again to speak, "Who helped yo--" Roger took the phone away from my ear.
He grabbed my hand that was still holding it and pulled them apart. He put the telephone back onto its holder and started to push me away from it. I could hardly move, though. I wanted to know the answer to my questions. "You don't have to talk to him." Roger whispered to me.
"But--" I said. He placed his hands on my hips, pulling me closer to him. "He,"
"He what?"
I looked down trying to hide my tears. "He escaped." I mumbled. Those were some of the hardest words I've ever had to say. I couldn't bare it.
Roger breathed in deeply. He lifted my chin up, gazing into my eyes. "He couldn't have. They have him locked away. He was lying just to scare you."
"Then how did he know our phone number? How did he know we had a kid and were getting married?" I asked. I could hear my voice shaking.
"He knew?" Roger asked. I nodded my head in response. Roger pulled away from me and walked over to Mary. She handed Magnolia over to him and stood up. She was the only one who understood Roger and I needed some time alone to talk. "Everyone, Kk and I are gonna need some time. Sorry, but do you mind coming back later?" He announced.
The boys all looked at each other and nodded their heads. They followed Mary to the door all exiting. On the way out, Brian came up to me and rubbed my shoulder. "We'll always be here for you, Kk." He whispered. Then, they were all gone. Just Roger, Maggie, and Me.
I sat down on the sofa, looking down at my feet and picking at my palm. "How'd he know any of this?" I mumbled. Roger walked over to the baby bed. We had one in the living room, our room, and Maggie's room.
Roger gently set her down and walked back over to me. "I don't know how he knows anything. But, again, I promise I will let myself be tortured to death before I let anything happen to you. To you or Magnolia." He said. He wrapped an arm around me and kissed my temple. "This time, nothing is going to happen. This time is different, and he's not going to take you or the baby.
I wiped away my tears and rested my head on his shoulder. "I'm still scared. What if he's watching us?" That's when I realized something. He probably didn't even care for me anymore, so why would he be watching us? I felt fear run down my spine as I stood up. "What if he's planning to take the baby?"
Roger stood up next to me. "Why would he--" I think that's when Roger realized why I said that. His eyes went wide. He ran back over to Maggie's crib and picked up the sleeping baby. He held her tightly, kissing the top of her head.
We both looked at each other. I was even more scared now. I turned around, closing the blinds in the window. He could be watching us right now. I ran around to the kitchen and the dining room, closing those windows too. When I came back into the living room, Roger and Magnolia were sitting on the sofa. He seemed so alert.
"What do we do now?" I asked. "Did you lock the doors?"
"The doors are locked. I guess we should call Brian. He'll know what to do." Roger stood up and handed Magnolia to me. Her hand grabbed my finger, as she cooed softly. I didn't want to loose something so beautiful. I wouldn't loose something so beautiful.
Roger picked up the phone and dialed Brian's number. He didn't live far away, so he was probably home, unless he went with the others to get lunch. I heard the phone dial 5 times. "Brian, will you come back over? We really need you." Roger said.
I couldn't hear the other side of the conversation, but I could imagine Brian asking, "Why? You just had me leave."
"We don't know what to do, I--" Roger paused and nodded his head. "Look, just come over, we'll explain it then." He paused another second before mouthing a good-bye and hanging up. "He'll be here soon."
I was about to talk, but before I did, I heard a creak from another room. Our house was very creaky, so it could've been anything, but I had this really off feeling about it. All of a sudden, Maggie woke up. She started crying and pouting. She's only ever cried once, so it was really weird.
"Up stairs, come on." Roger whispered, taking my arm and quickly walking to the stairway. I tried to get Maggie to stop crying, but she wouldn't. On the way to the stairs, we passed the table where her bottle was. I swiftly picked it up as we passed, putting it into her mouth. She was silent again, giving us a better chance in hiding.
