Christmas '85A loud crack of thunder had jolted me awake, sending me into a panic as I sat up in bed.
"Christ." I groaned, looking over at the clock on the nightstand seeing that it was only nine in the morning. Nine in the morning on Christmas. I sighed, removing the blankets from me and slipping into my slippers. I walked down the stairs, holding onto the banister that was wrapped in red and green garland. What was the point of decorating if no one was gonna be here?
I stared at the Christmas tree that was lit up, and at all the presents that surrounded it. They wouldn't be opened until New Years Eve when Lucia and Tonya would be home again.
I exhaled, turning on the TV as it was already on MTV. I walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bowl, some cereal and started pouring it in. I looked into the fridge, only to slam it shut realizing there was no milk in the fridge.
"Idiot, I was at the store yesterday." I mumbled angrily to myself, dumping the cereal back into the box. I opted for just having some coffee for breakfast. As the coffee was brewing, I went through the mail. I tossed bills to the side, and only payed attention to what was important. I smiled at the Christmas cards I had received from my cousins in Florida and my grandparents in Texas. I had other cards from childhood friends that I only talked to on birthdays and important days as we have slowly parted ways. It was still nice to see their growing families from afar. I should send them thank you cards.
The coffee was done percolating and I quickly made a cup with two sugars and some creamer. I went over to the landline, dialing my moms house number. After endless ringing, she did not answer.
"Hi mom, merry Christmas...I hope everyone is having fun, sorry I didn't want to come home this year, but tell everyone I love them. Bye."
I sat down on the couch, watching what was going on in the world of pop culture, shortly after Madonnas 'Crazy for You' started playing on the TV.
I zoned out, as I began to thing about the boys. Tommy had gone home to Covina for a few days, Vince was still in town, but he was with his family. Mick had flown back to Indiana to see his grandparents. And Nikki, well...uh, he sent gifts a few days earlier to Tom and Nona. I think he mentioned something that his mom tried calling? He didn't want to talk about it.
I groaned when the phone started ringing, probably mom calling me back and yelling at me once again on why I didn't want to come home for the holidays.
"Hello?"
"Morning, Princess." I smiled when I heard Nikki's voice.
