Year: Sophomore
Like most high schools in the United States, our school had homecoming week. Every year, we would have a theme. For example, when I was a freshman, the theme was cities. The freshmen got New York, the sophomores got Honolulu, the juniors got Vegas, and the seniors got Chicago. Each grade was assigned a hallway to decorate with their given city, and at the end of the week, the winning hallway would be announced. Of course, the seniors would always win.
This year, the theme was cartoons. The freshmen had Rug Rats, the sophomores had Scooby-Doo, the juniors had Fairly Odd Parents, and of course, the seniors got SpongeBob. I was kinda envious of the juniors and seniors, especially the seniors. Also, the they and the freshmen got Nickelodeon cartoons, while we got stuck with something from Cartoon Network. So yeah, we felt like the odd ones out. Someone said that the sophomores should've gotten Danny Phantom instead so that way we'd all have something from the same company, and I agreed.
But then at the start of this year, memes about Shaggy being an all-powerful and mighty god sprang up. Unfortunately, since this happened in 2014, no one said anything. If I was a high school sophomore this year and this was the homecoming theme, I'd be extremely lucky and I wouldn't envy anyone at all. Instead, our hallway probably would have been decorated with memes and who knows, maybe a shrine would be built to Shaggy. Too bad the timing had to be five years too early.
Anyway, on the Friday of homecoming week, we had our annual parade after school. Streets would get blocked off for us and the entire town would stand on the sidelines for candy and cheering us on. Most clubs would get to be in the parade (although most were sports teams) and have their own float. I was in the art club, but they never got to be in the parade.
However, I still wanted to be in it, so I decided to sneak my way in. When I got outside, I saw all the chaos of people getting ready for the parade, and I saw three people standing around, dressed as Cosmo, Wanda, and Timmy. I went up to them, and the person dressed as Timmy was a girl I knew since freshman year and we got along well. Because they were the golf club and only had three members, they didn't get a float but still got to be in the parade by walking. They invited me to walk with them, and it was a lot of fun. Thankfully, my Spanish teacher that year said she would hold onto my backpack for me while she drove the float for the girls volleyball team, which was Powerpuff Girls.
I texted my mom about how I got into the parade, so she came by to one point in the sidelines to see me walk in it.
That night I went to the homecoming game, and when the halftime show came around, believe it or not, they reenacted the Sweet Victory scene from that one SpongeBob episode called Band Geeks. There was a guy dressed as SpongeBob and he stood in the middle of the band, while another guy I knew very well stood on the side and sang the song. And he did very well.
This was my most memorable homecoming, as well as one of my favorite high school memories. Sadly, we never had something like this ever again, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted.
