Today I saw two street cats
They were fighting
I don't know how it started
One stepped on the other's tail perhaps
By accident?
On purpose?
It doesn't really matter, does it?
They circled each other, then...
Pounced
Claws extended
Teeth bared
Other cats swarmed around them
My heart swelled
They were going to stop them!
But no
NO!
They joined the fight
Snarling and growling, they joined the fight
Bodies trampled
Faces bled
They bit and clawed and hissed
Scratched and beat each other senseless
And I knew
They wouldn't stop until Death arrived
They fought like savages
Because they were savages
But what unnerved me the most
Was not the sounds or the blood
Or the fact that one might die
It was the fact that these cats
These wild beasts
These animals
Had the same face I did
Their teeth weren't pointy but flat
Like mine
Their claws were actually nails
Like mine
Their eyes just like mine
Their voices just like mine
Yet... so different
And I realized
They were animals, after all
