She read to him at midnight

Each and every word and phrase

They were whispered by the candlelight

They were seen through the haze

The letters left her plump red lips

And landed in his calloused hands

The words at her fingertips

That came from distant lands

She cast a spell at twilight

On the distraught soul by her side

Who wouldn't give up without a fight

Who would neither run nor hide

The words embraced him in their warmth

They caressed him, soft and smooth

They sat with him by the hearth

Revealing his wandering heart's truth

She breathed the sentences at noon

When the fiery sun burned away his sorrows

His ears caught every beat and tune

Of the words that chased away his shadows

The phrases pierced his alert eyes

And settled onto his troublesome mind

They made his curiosity rise

For there were more treasures to find

She guided his hunt at dawn

For the words, his deepest desire

Had chosen to play him like a pawn

And set his entire life on fire

A fire that seared and ignited his being

A fire that fueled his beating heart

A fire that distracted him from seeing,

Seeing his world fall apart

She read to him every day and night

From a rough, leather-bound book

It set his whole body alight

And one page is all it took.
