"PeterPan" I began as I opened the large book up infront of my friends.
"A story book?" They asked in disbelief.
"Isn't that for kids?" Liz asked scoffing at the picture of Peter Pan on the first page.
"Maybe from the looks of it but in this story, Peter Pan isn't who you think he is." I said smirking to myself. It had been the third time I read the book and still the character intrigues me. Mainly because he portrays a villain.
"I don't understand. Isn't he a good fun loving guy who hate growing up? And takes kids to Neverland and likes Wendy?" Melony asked from her spot on the top bunk of Courtney's room. Beside her say Courtney herself holding her phone up for Melony to see.
"In bedtime stories yes. But this is not your ordinary story. In here Peter Pan is mischievous, cunning, tricky, a great liar, and is evil" I said turning the page to the beginning.
"So basically he's a villain" Melony said turning her attention back to the phone screen, a growing disinterest in the book.
"Basically but I like him as a villain" I shrugged and stared at the picture of him flying through the sky, his shadow not far behind.
"You like all villains" Liz added scrolling through her phone mindlessly. She laid on top of Courtney's bed while I laid on her floor on my stomach, the book sprawled out infront of me.
"Because they're evil and cunning and manipulative! I love that! Plus they always have an interesting back story to why they're so evil" I smirked as I looked at the girls.
"Kailey you've never met a real villain before. If you did you wouldn't like them all that much any more" Liz said sitting up.
"That's because they don't exist. They live in fairy tales and movies only."
"And I'm pretty sure if I ever met Peter Pan, I'd like him" I added.
"Until he manipulates you and leaves you injured or broken hearted" Courtney said bringing her knees up to her chest.
I thought for a bit, the idea was possible and then I'd be left with a not so large liking for villains. "But," I began. "What if he doesn't? And it doesn't matter. If he ever did do that then I'd get my revenge. Manipulate him back"
Courtney let out a sigh. "It's not that easy" she stared at the other side of the room and reached up and began fixing her ponytail in the mirror across the room. It's a miracle if she could actually see from that high up and know if it looks good or not.
"Yeah well not everything is easy. But Peter Pan shouldn't be hard to trick. Only if you have the right information" I said turning to the page where Captain Hook and PeterPan are talking.
"Is Wendy even in that book?" Courtney asked eyeing the book suspiciously as if the book is ruining her childhood. It probably is, a favorite hero is actually a villain.
"Wendy Darling? No. She was never mentioned" I paused briefly before continuing. "But there is a mention of another girl. It doesn't say her name nor does it describe what she looks like. She disappears after a chapter and is never mentioned again."
"That's unlikely to happen in any story. Every character that does eventually leave is at least mentioned" Liz said reading a page from the story.
"Indeed but this is no ordinary story. It has no end. It stops after a cliff hanger between the girl and Pan. As if the ending was too horrible to write down. A few pages later the story goes on for a page with Hook and Pan but no mention of the girl" I said lowering my eyes to the picture of Pan standing there alone by a garden. His face was drawn as hopeful and his eyes twinkled, a face that was never drawn in this book. He was always scowling and he was darker. This Peter Pan was different.
"The last page of the book after a few blanks is just a few sentences. It wraps him up like describing the ending. It says that he's a monster and should never be trusted. A ruthless monster." The girls looked at me suddenly interested in the book.
It's as if that joyful Peter Pan on the page was torn, ripped, and mauled into pieces and put back together but without a heart. The book described him as ruthless and yet it doesn't tell what had happened. It jus simply skipped over it.
"What else is in that story Kailey?" Liz asked falling from the bed slowly and crawling up next to me to review the book herself.
"Lots of events. And it all starts at Pan's beginning in the orphanage where he lived a life that wasnt easy. The orphan code was to take what you can get and steal what you can get. It was a way of survival. To get all that they could even if it meant stealing. Some of the older boys would lock the younger ones up in their rooms and take their food for themselves. Pan was included to he locked away. He learned to pickpocket locks and soon he became an older boy."
"Sounds like a tough life" Melony said thoughtfully.
I nodded. "It was. Being an orphan back then wasnt easy as it is now."
Courtney climbed down from her bed and sat on the ground opposite from Liz and I so that she was facing us.
"So let me see, Peter Pan is evil. Was once an orphan. And something horrible happened to a girl whose not Wendy. Maybe he murdered her" she said crossing her legs.
Melony gasped loudly as she scurried down the ladder. "Killed her?! Why?!"
"He was described ruthless. Meaning he would do anything to get his way. Even killing" I said rolling my arms under my chest like a cat would do. I kicked my feet up to dangle in the air gently moving them back and forth.
"But even then this is Peter Pan! He wouldn't murder anyone! Right?"
"That may be for other stories. But this one it is possible. Which may explain why she was never mentioned again"
"Impossible!" Liz exclaimed, a sudden peak of interest bubbling to the surface. "I don't think Pan would kill anyone!"
"Well these are just theories. No one really knows what happened in Pan's life. Just that there's many different stories basing around it"
Liz went silent for a moment thinking it over before she finally spoke again. "So he's fictional" it was more of a statement rather than a question
"Yes all books are but some are based on true stories" I smiled to myself enjoying their interest in the book. I for one truly believe this as a work of fiction but at some parts of the book the pain Pan felt seemed to real for a fictional character. As if the author went through the pain himself. There was no mention of the author, nor is their name pasted on the front. All it says is the title, 'Peter Pan'.
"So these things actually happened?" One of the girls asked raising their eyebrows up questionably.
"Don't know. Doesn't say so in the back of the book"
"So tell me more about this Peter Pan guy. Is he cute?" Melony asked leaning forward from her spot on the floor.
"Well..." I began preparing myself to tell yet another tale of the dark Peter Pan. Quite interesting I may say because throughout the story Pan was not once been called Peter Pan.
