Mike and Joyce were trying to figure out where Hopper was by using the map system that they put together from Will's drawings. Joyce heard a car driving up to the house. It was Bob. She needed to keep him away from all this. So she walked out the door to him.
"Hey, I would've called sooner but the phone line wasn't working" Bob said, carrying what looked like a blue Rubik's cube along with some books. Joyce gave him an assuring smile. "Oh that's okay. But we don't need anything right now. He's sleeping, and..." "I could wait with you if you want" Bob suggested. "I wish you could but now's just not a good time, and...actually..come inside" Joyce said, gesturing him to come inside. Maybe he could help.
When they got inside, Bob was a little confused to see all these drawings taped across the house. "Huh...why is this all here exact-" "I told you the rules. No questions" Joyce interrupted Bob. She needed to inform him so they could resolve the problem quicker. Bob nodded of course. They went to the kitchen, to the page where Will last saw Hopper. "We need to find this right here. The X" Joyce said drawing an X on it with crayon.
"What's at the X? Pirate treasure?" Bob chuckled, then immediately stopped when he saw the others with serious faces. This wasn't a joke. Nor a question. "Ok, ok, let me think" Bob cleared his throat. He began to look around the room.
He then looked down the hallway, seeing some of the pages shaped as a heart on the window at the vary end of the hall. "I know that shape. That's Lover's Lake" Bob pointed, then looked at another set of pages. "And this ones Lake Jordan. Then if you follow that, you go to Sattler's quarry. Then you keep following, and then it moves to......the Eno river" Bob explained as he went throughout the rooms. "The lines aren't roads, but they act like roads. And of you follow them, you'll see they don't go over water" Bob kept explaining. "Don't you get it? It's not a puzzle, it's a map. It's a map of Hawkins."
Elsewhere
Back at Becky's house, El was staring at her mother sitting in the chair still. "I just need to understand. Where are you from? Where were you all this time?" Becky asked her.
"She won't get better...will she?" El asked. Becky didn't want to answer truthfully, but she couldn't lie. "No, I don't think so sweetie. She's not in any pain, she's just..stuck. Like in a dream." "Is it a good dream?" El asked, turning to Becky. Becky looked down, then back at her. "I hope so." El sighed sadly, wanting to help her mother. "Sometimes she says different words...usually" Becky said.
This was all getting to much to handle for El. She couldn't hold back the tears no more, the pain of not being able to talk to her own mother. Becky then held her hand. "She always believed you were out there, Jane. That you would come home one day" Becky said, trying to cheer her up. El sniffled, letting out less tears now.
They walked upstairs to a room, opening the door. The light that was in the room were dim and it had yellow walls. There was a window, in front of it, a baby cradle. El walked inside the room. She went to the cradle and picked up a toy bear that was in it.
"If you want, I have a bed, you can stay here with me?" Becky suggested. El turned to her, not knowing how to respond. It would be nice to be near El's mother, or what was left of her, but what about Hopper? El nodded as she would consider the idea.
El started noticing the light in the hallway flickering. "Oh yeah, that. It happens sometimes. Old house, bad wiring" Becky said. El kept following the flickering lights. Almost as if it was trying to take her somewhere. Each light flickered to the next one. They went downstairs, following every light that flickered. Eventually it led to El's mother.
