Here With You25-year-old Harper was in PA for the fourth of July. The first time she's been back home since she was 15. Out in the backyard, Caleb was cooking on the grill. Across the street in a dirt circle sat most of the development including Ryan, Shane, and Sarah. It's been a tradition for the four to spend fourth of July together ever since Harper moved to LA, so they weren't gonna screw that up just cause her father wanted her home for the holiday. Harper was sat inside at the kitchen table with her father, Jules, Duncan, her new step-mother and newest half-sibling who was only a few months old. The other siblings were outside running around with the other kids. The baby started crying, his pacifier was in her father's room, Harper volunteered to go get it.
While in the room she was searching for the pacifier, that's when she came across paperwork with her name on it. From the hospital that treated her cancer when she was a little girl. She stared at the paper in disbelief. It was a list of options of chemo for lung cancer in adults. In shock, Harper returned out to the kitchen with papers in hand.
"Dad, what are these?" His smiled changed in a snap. He quickly got up taking them from her hands. "Nothing to worry about Harper." He quickly spoke before running out the back door in the direction of Caleb. "Harper, what's wrong?" Jules questioned, worriness covering her face. "I'm gonna find out." Quickly Harper ran after him, only to find him whispering with Caleb. Holding the papers in his face. "Dad, what is going on!" She yelled, making both men look at her. Harper's eye went from her father to Caleb to the papers. "They're papers from the hospital." "No shit, why are they sending you stuff with my name on it and why are they sending up chemo options for cancer?" "Harper, they think... they think it's back." In a matter of seconds, the whole world started to fall around Harper. "Why do you know this, I'm an adult shouldn't I get this before you?" Harper started freaking out. "I told your doctor before we moved back that if anything related to this happened to tell me first. I didn't mean for you to find out this way Harp. I just wanted you to have a good fourth of July with your family before worrying about this." You just stare blankly at your father. Once every 6 months, you have to get a cat scan to make sure cancer hasn't returned. You just got one done a week before leaving for PA. Your thoughts are interrupted when you hear laughter from across the street. You look and see him. Ryan. Laughing with Shane, Sarah and the other people sat around the barely lit campfire. He held a bottle of beer in one hand. "Does he know?" Harper speaks barely above a whisper. "Yes, I called and told him before you came." Harper looked at your father in disbelief. She scoffs, "How many other people know about this that aren't me?" "Harper, the only reason I told Ryan was that I thought he was Health Care Proxy." He thought that Ryan had the job of making medical decisions if Harper was unable to. It wasn't, Harper knew that if the time ever came where the plug had to be pulled Ryan wouldn't be able to do it without blaming himself his whole life. Instead, Harper assigned this role to Eugene Lee Yang. Who over the last few years she has become good friends with. She knew he would do the right thing and in the end not blame himself for the rest of his life. "Just myself, Caleb, Ryan, and Eugene." Harper looked over at Ryan once again. Before she could control herself, her feet were taking her over to him. He perked up when he saw her approaching the group of people. "Hey, Harper!" He greeted, however, his smile quickly left when he saw the look on your face. After how many years of knowing each other he can tell when something is wrong. You don't say anything, which quickly silences Shane and Sarah as well. You climb into Ryan's lap, almost as if a baby. Wrapping your arms around his neck, your legs dangling off the armrest. Ryan doesn't mind, you're a small human and are as light as a feather. Anywho he's used to this, but this time it's different. "Harper, you good?" Shane questions, no reply. "Yeah Harp, are you okay?" Sarah asked, no reply. All they got was Harper closing her eyes, holding onto Ryan tighter. "I'm sorry, he told me not to tell you," Ryan whispered leaning his head down, getting closer to her ear so only she could hear. Harper nods her head. "I know." "If there is anything I can do-" Harper quickly cuts him off. "Just... be here with me." Ryan happily agreed, setting the bottle of beer down on the ground in order to wrap his arms around the love of his life.
The two just sat there, listening to the buzzing of the world going on around them. Dinner was called and they were just left there alone, nothing but the sounds of the crackling fire and their breaths. Sunset finally began, both Harper and Ryan fell asleep. Ryan slowly started to stir awake, awakening Harper as well. Ryan nuzzled his face into her neck and out of the blue mumbled. "Marry me." Harper quickly sat up from her slumped position against Ryan and looked at him dumbfounded. "What?" A smile quickly rose on Ryan's face when he finally realized what he just asked. "Marry me," Ryan spoke again, this time with more confidence and no in some sleep fit of adrenaline. "Ryan-" He cut her off, he knew what she was going to say. Some bullshit about how he should leave her because he shouldn't have to worry about this cancer bullshit. "In sickness and in health." Harper stared at him for a few seconds before pulling him in for a kiss. "Yes." She whispered pulling back. Ryan's famous dorky Ryan Bergara smile grew on his face. The moment, however, was ruined by the noise of Shane and Sarah crossing the street with plates of food for the newly engaged couple. "Come on love birds, I don't know how you two sat here all day with nothing to eat," Shane spoke, holding two plates full of hamburgers and ships while Sarah held two cups of soda. Harper tried to move off of Ryan, however, she only got to swing her legs to sit up correctly before Ryan's arm snaked its way around her waist keeping her from moving anymore.
Laughter filled the air as the sky was now black and the streetlights and the campfire were the only things giving off light. "What was tonight even about?" Sarah suddenly questioned the random act of Harper and Ryan just sitting outside not speaking for hours. Ryan looked at Harper. He wasn't going to tell them if she didn't want it out in the open. "Um, my cancer is back." Harper shuddered out, followed by gasps by both Shane and Sarah. "She's going to be okay though," Ryan spoke tightening the grip around her waist, Harper looked back at her now-fiancee. "In sickness and in health." Silence, until it was once again broken by Shane. "Wait did we miss something?" "Oh yeah, we're kind of engaged now as well."_
This was based on a weird dream I had
