"WAKE UP Nova, we have school." Alec's voice ripped the said girl from her restless slumber, her purple orbs tearing through the air as she sought out an enemy but only met with the sleepy gaze of her brother.
"We have what?" Nova croaked as she pushed upright and scrubbed the sleep from her eyes.
"School. Classes, homework, a building full of hormones and sweaty humans." Alec said with a smirk, a low laugh escaping his throat when she wrinkled her nose at the idea of being around other kids. "I've got breakfast ready, hurry up and get dressed."
Nova grumbled her reluctant acceptance of his tasty bribery and pushed up off the mattress with a groan. Alec left her room and closed the door behind him to give her the privacy to change. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a pair of jeans and an oversized flannel shirt to wear for the day. Pulling on her clothes, she shambled to the bathroom to brush her teeth and run her fingers through her hair to try and tame the wild mess of curls. Shuffling her way into the kitchen, she took the plate of pancakes from her twin and leaned against the counter beside him since they didn't have a table yet.
"Why are we going to school?" Nova mumbled over the mouthful of pancake and syrup.
"Swallow your food, then talk." The girl rolled her eyes at her brother's chiding, making a big show about gulping down her food before speaking.
"Yes, mom. I said, why are we going to school?" They dropped their plates in the sink to be cleaned later before moving outside to clamber into the car. The rising sun cast a rainbow into the sky as it swam towards the horizon. Trees clawed at the world with long and spindly fingers like they were trying to crash the atmosphere into the dirt.
"We're going because we still have to blend in, remember. Kids our age are in school, so that's what we do." Nova groaned as they pulled into the student parking lot, the lined spaces filling up with cars and dead-eyed students as they shuffled towards their respective buildings. Nova slammed her door and moved to follow the crowd, the roar of an engine reaching her ears as she walked.
"Nova!" Alec barked as he watched the vehicle zip by, the scream of music following a few seconds later. A loud screech shattered the morning's silence as Nova finally turned to see what had Alec in such a state. Metallic blue shone in the rising sun, the brilliant chrome grill just inches from slamming into her shins. She trailed up the hood with glazed orbs, her sleepy gaze locking with those blue ones from the furniture shop. His mouth lifted into a wicked smirk as she quirked a brow at him, the tween passenger growling something at him before jumping from the immobile vehicle. She snarled at him and flipped him off before stalking off towards the middle school across the campus.
"Do you do this to every girl, or am I just lucky?" Nova called over the loud rumble of the engine a few inches away. She stepped out of the way and let him pull into his desired parking space beside their car, the boy stepping out with a sleepy whine. He pressed his knuckles into his lower back as he stretched out his torso to both pop his joints and flaunt his toned body beneath his off-white tee. He wasn't wearing the same jeans, but they hugged his lower half just as perfectly as he turned to face her over the roof of the car.
