fear

She runs swiftly through the forest trying her hardest not to trip over her own two feet. Behind her she hears the person getting closer. Tears fall down her face as she thinks back to her family waiting for her at home. She was scared. She knew she was about to die.

Out of nowhere, an arrow flies past her face making her freeze instantly. She glances to her right seeing a dark figure running straight to her. Her body doesn't listen to her brain as her brain yells for her to move. The figure tackles her to the ground making her cry out in pain and fear.

She fights against the person with every speck of energy left in her. Another figure shadows over her and then another. She screams as a hand holds up a shiny silver trident. Her eyes enlarge as they follow the weapon to her chest. Screaming in pain she glances around at the figures as they all laugh. Her sight starts to turn blurry and her breathing starts to become shallow. A cannon goes off as she closes her eyes and takes her last breath.

"Ah!"

"Adeline! Wake up!"

Opening her eyes, Adeline looks around to see a small light blue room. Her hands grip the blankets that have been thrown off her body.

"Addie... Are you okay?"

Adeline sits up and looks at the girl sitting at the end of her bed. Red hair, brown eyes, pale white skin. Aurora, her sister.

"Yeah I'm okay."

Aurora watches her little sister in worry as she rubs her hands down her face. Aurora knew that the upcoming reaping was the reason for Adeline's recent nightmares.

"What happened this time?"

Adeline shakes her head as tears start to form in her eyes.

"I don't want to talk about it."

Aurora nods and pulls Adeline into a tight hug. The two embrace each other in silence, trying their best not to think about the yearly hunger games.

"Aurora! Adeline! Breakfast is ready!"

"Okay mother!" Aurora shouts in reply.

Adeline plays with her fingers as Aurora makes her way to the door. Aurora turns around and glances once more at her sister then sighs and closes the door.

As soon as the door shuts, tears make their way onto Adeline's pillowcase. She had just turned 12, which meant she was finally able to enter the hunger games. She was scared. Never had she worried about dying at such a young age, never had she worried about being murdered. Not until today. Today was the reaping. Today would be a nightmare.

. . . . .

Adeline stands in front of the mirror as her mother stands behind her fixing her long red hair into a braid. Her mother's nimble fingers shake as they try to intertwine the pieces.

"I can help mother."

The older woman moves to the side as Aurora takes her place. The older sister completes the braid then does the other side.

"Thank you petal."

Aurora smiles lightly as her mother kisses her forehead. She takes a few glances at the older woman trying not to look suspicious.

The woman had long graying hair that had once been a flaming red when she was younger. Her eyes were once a beautiful sparkling blue that have now died down and become dull. Her face held deep wrinkles and stress lines from baring pain and loss. The woman was tired. She raised three children on her own for three years now. The children's father had died from a boating incident when her youngest child was only one.
