I walk into school on Monday morning. After helping Gavin out, I was really happy today. I scooch through rush hour and unpack at my locker. Faith comes sashaying towards her locker and starts to unpack also. She's not wearing only one color now. She glances at me.
"Hey." I say.
"Oh, hi." Faith mumbles.
"I saw you on Friday night at the soccer field." I say.
"Yeah it was for Rueben's birthday party. He had soccer practice before, so he just had the party there."
"Oh."
She seems annoyed that I'm talking to her. Just then, Ness runs over.
"Omg, Faithie, Rueben totes likes you."
Faiths frown turns to a grin.
"I know!! This is great!" She exclaims.
They link arms and start heading towards the bathroom. I look at a nearby clock. It's 8:23. Everyone's first class starts at 8:25. I figure I should probably tell them they're going to be late if they go into the bathroom now. I push open the LADIES door and see Ness and Faith fixing their hair.
"Hey, um guys class starts in two minutes, we're probably gonna be late."
"What are you talking about?" Ness asks. "We're ditching."
My jaw drops. "Ditching? But that's against school rules!" I remark.
"Don't be such a nerd, Kirsten." Faith says, adding mascara to her eyelashes.
The bell rings.
"Come on guys if you get caught, you're going to be in so much trouble." I say.
"Oh I forgot my lipstick!" Faith says, ignoring me. She leaves the bathroom. Faith never used to wear makeup. Ness looks over at me.
"You know Faith was only your friend because she felt bad for you." Ness tells me.
"What?"
"Yeah. You didn't have like, any friends until Faith came along."
"That is not true!"
"So are you saying Faithie lied to me?" She laughs.
"Faith said that?"
"Yep. All of it. So I suggest you go to class you loser and don't talk to us. It's obvious you're just jealous of us."
Suddenly, Faith walks back in. "Alright, got it." She holds out her lipstick. I look in her eyes and she looks in mine. I try to hold back the tears but I can't. They start coming, like a waterfall. I turn around and burst out of the bathroom. I head down the hallway, but instead of turning into Mrs. Roses's room, I head right for the janitor's closet. I sink to the floor in there and let it all out. My tears. My thoughts. I can't believe someone would say that about me. Especially Faith. I slide my foot straight out and it knocks over the mop bucket, which spills all over my jeans.
"Ew...." I say.
I get up and wipe up my tears from my face. I open the door and walk out to the hallway. I run through the halls, (which is hard in damp pants)through the cafeteria and I finally end up at the front office. The secretary, Mrs. Valey, welcomes me.
"Can I help you?" She asks.
"Yes. Can I call my mom please to come pick me up?" I ask.
"May I ask the reason?"
"I have a headache. Nothing that the nurse can do though," I say. "I want my mom." It makes me sound like a little kid, but it's the truth.
"Ok. Let me get the phone."
She walks over and picks up a black phone and brings it over to her desk.
"The number?"
"1-664-233-5821." I say.
"5821." Mrs. Valey whispers to herself.
She waits for a little bit, then finally someone picks up.
"Hi, yes this is Winnipeg Middle School, I'm calling with a concern from your daughter."
I hear mom's muffled voice.
"Yes. She said she had a bad headache and she wants her mother."
Muffled voice again.
"Ok, thank you. Um, hold one minute." She places the phone on her shoulder. "She will be coming in ten minutes. You probably want to get your stuff from your locker."
"Ok." I say. I leave the office. I head back to my locker. I unpack and head back to the office. I can only think of Faith. What happened to her? I just don't get it. We were true friends, not just friends because she felt bad for me. Another tear. Once I get to the office, Mrs. Valey says I can sit on the bench outside to wait for mom if I want to, so I do. Mom comes, we leave, many questions from mom, but everything goes quiet once I fall asleep.
