We arrived at the doctor's office about 30 minutes before the appointment started. We got checked in and we were handed a whole bunch of paperwork. We started to fill it out and when we finished we took it back to the front desk. As we sit there and wait there a little longer, and I lean my head against Mark's shoulder. He moves his hand to find mine and he interlocks his fingers with mine.
What is this specialist going to say to us? Is she going to tell us that everything is okay? Is she going to say that one of us is infertile? Is she going to tell me that I have some underlying issue that has gone undetected? Is she going to tell us that we are never going to have kids?
"Mark and Murphy Stevens," A doctor announces into the waiting room. We both get up and Mark takes my hand again and we follow the doctor back to their office. We sit down in the chairs and she sits in front of us.
"Murphy and Mark Stevens, it is nice to meet you," she says shaking our hands, "I'm Dr. Ariana Santos. So, your friend Willow called me and told me a little bit about what is going on, so why don't you tell me a little bit more." She leans back in her seat and pulls out a clipboard with our paperwork on it.
"We have been married for almost 3 years and about 2 years ago, I think we were married for about 5 or 6 months, we wanted to start trying for a baby. We tried and tried, with negative results every time, until about a year ago, we found out I was pregnant. We made it 10 weeks and then we had our first ultrasound and there was no heartbeat. We were okay about it, it meant that it wasn't meant to be, but Willow had just announced her pregnancy, so we were both struggling to be happy for our best friends. We continued trying after we had clearance from our doctor and we haven't had any good news since. This problem almost broke us apart," I explain. Tears form in my eyes at the thought that we almost broke up. Mark looks over at me and takes over the explanation.
"We had just talked about everything and how we were fine with whatever happens and then Willow told us that she booked this appointment and here we are."
"I see. Why did it take you so long to see a specialist?" She asks.
"We didn't think it would be necessary. We thought it would just happen one day, but it has been 2 years, but at the same time I don't want to give ourselves false hope." I shift in my seat and Mark reaches over and locks his hand with mine.
"That is completely understandable. Looking at the paperwork you filled out earlier, it honestly doesn't make any sense on why you weren't conceiving that was until I looked at your family history. Murphy, you put down here that your mother had issues conceiving as well which looks like it is linked to PCOS, which is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. That is the most come cause of fertility issues in women. It also happens to be genetic." Polycystic what?
"What is that?" Mark asks beating me to the punch.
"It is a hormonal disorder found in women. It causes problems in ovulation, which in turn makes it hard to conceive. There isn't a cure, but there medications that can help. If we can get you on those, then I think we have a really good chance at you guys having a family."
Finally, an answer.
6 months later...
Time has passed and things are better. Actually, things are better than ever. Mark and I let go of the past and we are back to being our idiotic selves.
Today we are celebrating something rather important to our best friends. Today, we are celebrating Aria's first birthday. It also the day that Daniel and Emily finally got their shit together and decided to be a couple.
We arrived at Willow and Elijah's and parked along the street, seeing as the driveway is full. We walk on inside and I see Willow running around getting everything set up. Elijah is talking with everyone trying to keep them busy so everything can get set up. Daniel and Emily are with Aria playing with her. Kate and Toby are trying to keep their boys from eating the cake. Elijah's parents are trying to help Willow but she is going crazy.
Eventually, everything got set up and the party started. We got to enjoy our time with family and eat some delicious food. We set up Aria in her high chair and Willow pulled our her smash cake. We sing happy birthday to her and Aria slams her hands in the cake.
"AH!" She screams as she plays with the cake and makes a complete, utter mess.
"Alright, baby girl, I think that is enough," Willow says moving the cake away from her daughter. I watch Willow and Elijah work together to clean up Aria together and I feel someone lean their head on my shoulder.
"Is everything okay?" They ask. I look and see that it is Mark.
"Yeah, everything is okay."
And that's the truth. Everything is finally okay.
