Note From the Author
In this story, the main character along with all her siblings are deaf. To really capture the deaf culture everything they sign will be written in ASL (American Sign Language) order, where as everything verbally said will be written with English grammar. Try to enjoy the story even though ASL grammar can be a lot to grasp. Words will be connected with plus signs when written, but the plus signs aren't actually signed. Also words that are finger spelled will have dashes between them so that this can be recognized as a finger spelled word. Also note that ASL doesn't have signs for every English word. For example words like is, are, were, and, the, a, an, etc. are not words that are signed in ASL. Thank you.
Examples to show how sentences will be written:
English- Kathryn went to the store.
ASL- Store+ K-a-t-h-r-y-n+ went
When referring to past tense words "finished" will be added after the verb to indicate that the action has already happened. This will only be added if a word, like yesterday or other past tense times, haven't been added to the sentence.
