Long live the fast times, so come what may.
-The Reckless And The Brave, All Time Low.

Breakfast the next day was one of the noisiest, most chaotic affairs Lydia had ever experienced. The first game of the Quidditch season was starting in less than an hour, and, because it was Gryffindor against Slytherin, the entire school was on edge. Everyone was making frantic last-minute bets and hastily completing banners, mostly in gold and scarlet, since the entirety of Hufflepuff had sided with Gryffindor, as had three quarters of Ravenclaw.
Malia was clad in the Gryffindor colors from head to toe, wearing garish cherry red lipstick and nail polish, a hideous yellow sweater glittering with gold thread, and fake eyelashes to match. They shimmered when she blinked, drawing the attention of a few Hufflepuff boys that had stopped by to give Stiles, Scott and Danny last minute encouragements. Lydia had to stop herself from rolling her eyes at how stupid the outfit looked.
Danny, the team's newly appointed Keeper, looked positively green with nerves. Of course, Stiles was Captain, and a Chaser as well, so they had been spending hours at the pitch over the past few weeks, practicing. Scott would accompany them, staying out of their way by hitting a Bludger around on the opposite end of the stadium. Isaac would spend the time doing homework in one of the grandstands. It didn't seem to have made much of a difference to Danny's confidence, though.
"You're going to be fine, Wormtail," Lydia heard Stiles reassure him quietly. They were sitting right beside her, a foot of room between her and Danny, with Stiles on the other side of him. Lydia took a sip of orange juice, not looking at them as she continued listening.
"What if I'm awful, though?" said Danny anxiously. Lydia felt, rather than saw his knee bobbing restlessly under the table. "What if I miss every shot, and everyone hates me?"
"Nobody is going to hate you," said Stiles patiently. "And if anyone hassles you, I'll hex them." He cracked a grin at Danny, who smiled nervously. "Anyway, we are not going to lose to a bunch of Snakes. We're a better team, we have better players, and we work together better than they can."
Danny seemed to consider what Stiles had said, before nodding in agreement.
"Okay."
"Excellent," said Stiles cheerfully. "And hey, maybe you'll finally get her to notice you."
Lydia frowned. Danny had never shown interest in anyone before, boy or girl. She braved a glance over to see Danny's usually brown skin turn the color of late summer plums, his previous green pallor gone. She followed their line of sight, curious to see who 'her' was.
Lydia stifled a sound of shock and choked on her current mouthful of juice as she realized that both boys were looking at Malia, who was chatting excitedly with Kira, her lips a cherry blur as she spoke.
Oh, no. No no no no. Lydia thought, shocked. He can't, she likes Stiles...
"Lyds?" Allison poked her arm to get her attention. "We're going down to ze stadeeum now."
Lydia nodded dumbly, still lost in thought. She got up and walked out of the Great Hall as if controlled by a remote, almost tripping over a can of Stay Stuck glue that a bunch of first years were using in an attempt to glue fake lion whiskers to their faces.
