"Mom?" Keefe's hands shook slightly and an edge crept into his voice as he met Lady Gisela's cold, discerning eyes. Sophie noticed his stool lying on the ground. He must have kicked it over. "What do you want?"

"Oh relax—it has nothing to do with you. Just with the Moonlark." Her harsh gaze turned toward Sophie.

"You're not going to take her," Fitz warned, reaching for Sophie's gloved hand.

Lady Gisela rolled her eyes. "Such a disappointment, choosing that Vacker boy. Anyway, I haven't come to take her. I've come to deliver a message.

"Be careful, Sophie. Don't trust everyone you meet or everything you see. Sometimes you must realize your enemies are perhaps your greatest allies."

"Funny to hear that, coming from you," Keefe snarked, "After all, aren't you the ones hiding behind your stupid illusions and force fields? You know, I bet you're not even here right now."

"You're a clever boy, Keefe, but your stubbornness is a problem."

Sophie felt rage well up inside her stomach. Keefe's parents had no right to criticize him, not after how they treated their son. But if Keefe was right—and he probably was—her inflicting would just cause everyone else pain. So she could do nothing but watch as Lady Gisela flickered away and Keefe collapsed onto the sofa. Sophie hurried to comfort him, with Fitz fixated on her arm around his shoulder and Biana watched Fitz carefully.

"Well, that was one heck of a surprise visit," Keefe muttered.
