This book takes place in modern day Daegu, South Korea. It centers around the condition 'savant syndrome'. According to an article written by Darold A. Treffert, Savant syndrome is a rare, but extraordinary, condition in which persons with serious mental disabilities, including autistic disorder, have some ‘island of genius’ which stands in marked, incongruous contrast to overall handicap.
So pretty much these individuals are born with or develop remarkable cognitive 'gifts' that generally narrow down to five categories: music, art; usually drawing, painting or sculpting, mathematics, including lightning calculating or the ability to complete complex calculations in their heads within seconds, mechanical or spatial skills, including the capacity to measure distances precisely without benefit of measuring instruments, the ability to construct complex models or structures with painstaking accuracy or the mastery of map making and direction finding and unusual heightened sensory abilities, for example a savant with this skill could ingest any food and provide in detail every ingredient from just a single bite.
