Chapter 3 The Attack

Chavez's POV: days went by like nothing but I'll never forget this day for as long as I live me and Buck as well as my little baby brother Billy or Chivato as I like to call him as well as our dogs my two German Shepherds Bear and kalvik and Buck's St. Bernard Red Cloud were all with us we were down by the river even though Red Cloud didn't want us near the river because he was always worried about one of us falling in and drowning ourselves we were fishing so nothing really was going to happen everything was going well

Man this winter has been really tough I wish they would bring us more food for it Buck said

I know I hate winter to but before we know it it'll be spring so at least we would look forward to that "right? I replied

Yeah I guess you're right Chavez Buck said

I was 10 and Buck was 8 Chivato had just turned a year old last fall on November 23rd even though my parents found him on December 15 he was already starting to learn how to walk and talk it had been a few months since I got shot by accident by my evil stepfather I still have the scar from the bullet wound I occasionally would look over towards Chivato making sure he was doing alright he was laying over Buck's dog Red Cloud he Chivato had formed a tight bond with each other which Buck and I thought it was cute Red Cloud had curled up over Chivato to keep him safe and warm it was cold out that day fortunately for all three of us we had our buffalo skin jackets on to keep warm our mothers made them for us Bear and kalvik were off by themselves they didn't go too far from us everything seemed good until we heard Red Cloud barking aggressively and had stood up abruptly getting into protection mode

Chavez what's wrong with Red Cloud? Buck asked

I don't know Buck we better go check it out I answered

Right Buck replied

We got up grabbed everything we brought I picked Chivato up and carried him we made it back our village and what we saw chilled us to the bone our entire village was being attacked by the army and Murphy and Dolan's men as well as them themselves I knew I couldn't let Chivato see this we fled into the woods until it was all over when we returned there was nothing left the teepees were destroyed by fire there bodies lying everywhere I held Chivato in my arms as we looked at the carnage before us I couldn't believe it our home was gone I held Chivato tight as he started crying and was clinging onto me

Shhhh it's okay Chivato I'm right here I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere I told him in a soothing voice I gently kissed the side of his head and hugged him tight

we looked for our mother but we couldn't find her but then Red Cloud Buck and Bear and kalvik found her body I walked over to where Red Cloud was leading there she was our mother Buck looked over at me and shook his head I could tell he looked guilty

Mama! mama! Chivato cried reaching out to our mother but I gently rested his arm down and he turned and wrapped his arms around my neck and cried into my chest I cradled him in my arms trying not to cry myself if anything I was furious

What are we going to do now Chavez? Buck asked

I'm going to take revenge on Murphy&Dolan I said

Buck looked at me like he had seen a ghost he couldn't believe what he just heard but it was true I have to take revenge on Murphy&Dolan for what they did to our families
