I wake up with a sudden jolt. I open my eyes but I can't see anything, where the hell am I? What's going on?
I try to feel my surroundings, all the way around is cold metal... I seem to be in a box of some kind. I am stuck in the cold area, shaking with fear. I start to get agitated... why can't I remember anything? I can feel my eyes tear up, scared of the unknown.
When will I find out what's happening? It better be soon; I'm not sure how much more of this I can take, what with the confusion and memory loss... not to mention the fact that I'm literally stuck in a small box.
I stay like this for what feels like hours, when it has probably only been merely a few minutes, but I don't care... I need to know where I am and why. All of a sudden I hear a deafening screech and the box comes to a halt.
The roof above me is pulled open, the sun blinds me for only a few seconds but is then blocked by two boys. I see them peering in, looking directly at me. They look just as confused as I am.
One of them carefully jumps in the box with me. He has dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes. He looks up at the other boy before saying, "It's a girl?"
What, have they never seen a girl before? I hear lots of murmuring before I hear one boy shout out "I call dibs!' Quickly followed by another boy saying "Is she hot?" I roll my eyes in irritation.
They were both quickly silenced by the two boys who were looking into the box, who were just staring at me like I had two heads, making me squirm under their gazes.
A rope is thrown down and the boy helps me get my foot in the loop, before I'm hoisted up to a swarm of around 50 boys.
Wait, why aren't there any girls here? This doesn't make any sense. The blonde boy swiftly gets out of the box and the other boy says "Hey there greenie, welcome to The Glade. The name's Alby, what's yours?"
I am stood frozen as I try to remember. Why can't I remember anything, and why am I even here?
I am brought back to reality as Alby lets out a cough, signalling me to answer his question. "I don't know", I reply honestly.
Alby gives me a look of sympathy "it's alright, no reason to panic we've all been there." The crowd of boys edge closer to me, to the point where I'm shoulder to shoulder with some of them, all trying to get a look at me.
I push my shoulders inwards slightly just so that I'm not touching the boys surrounding me too much, chest tightening as I have in room to breath due to the lack of space the boys are giving me.
All of a sudden I hear a voice saying, "Why are all you shuckfaces standing around, there's work to be done." I spot the boy who's speaking, he's really tall, at least six foot, and has light green eyes. Wow, he's truly breathtaking.
Unfortunately for me, he looks unimpressed at my arrival. Beggers can't be choosers I guess. His eyebrows raise slightly as he scans my body up and down, as if I was under inspection. He quickly turns his gaze away from me and to Alby, who remains still in front of me, also observing me.
The boy sighs, " What the hell is this about? Is this some sort of joke? Has one of the Gladers put a girl down as a request and they actually did it?" He hits Alby with question after question.
"Why are you here?" Alby sneers at me, the boy obviously making him think a little bit.
I furrow my eyebrows together in confusion, "You know about as much as me about this." Both boys obviously take distaste at my lack of awareness.
The boy speaks up again, "Did anything come up with her?", clearly not bothering to push this conversation any further for now, hopefully giving me some time to piece everything together.
Without realising I make eye contact with the boy, who then glares at me before saying "what are you looking at greenie?" I look away from him, he's really intimidating, why doesn't he like me? He's barely said two words to me. Rude.
"Just a couple of planks of wood", Alby lazily points at the box where I came out of only a couple of minutes ago. The boy nods and heads to get the supplies, I guess this conversation's over.
There crowd starts to die down a little and I'm approached by a blond boy, who seems to have some sort of limp on his leg... I wonder how he got that.
"Don't mind Gally, he's just like that. Don't take anything he says personally." The blonde boy says to me with a hypnotising British accent.
Alby faces the boy, "Newt, show the greenie where she'll sleep and eat tonight." and with that, he walks off. I guess he's the 'leader' of the group and everyone follows his rules and instructions.
Newt walks me to a hut, filled with tonnes and tonnes of sleeping bags lying aimlessly on the floor. The next thing I notice is the awful smell poisoning my nostrils, causing me to scrunch up my nose in disgust.
Newt notices and laughs, "Oh yeah, hygiene isn't that popular with some of the other Gladers. But if you ever want to freshen yourself up bit, there are a couple of showers around the corner." He smiles, "Just be careful incase some of the guys want to join you in there>"
MI feel my cheeks turn beetroot red, which only makes Newt laugh harder, to the point where tears are bringing in his eyes. I'm sure I'm gonna get on really well with him.
He points to one near the door, "Here's your bed for the time being. It's not too comfy, but it's all we got for now."
I look at the sleeping bag lying on the ground. Great, so I have to sleep in the same room as 50 boys? That's gonna be interesting. "Thanks Newt" I smile softly.
My stomach rumbles with hunger, god I'm starving. Newt notices my whale of a stomach screaming, "Right lets take you to the kitchens." He says with a sweet smile as I follow him out of the reeking room.
