Vanessa took in a deep breath of the clear morning air before letting it out with a smile upon her face.

She took a few steps down the path that lead from the sidewalk to her home before stopping and reaching into her bag, gripping her fingers around her phone and promptly unlocking it. She instantly went into her contacts and found the name she was looking for. She dialed the number displayed on the screen after a moment of consideration,

“Hello?”

the voice on the other end chimed,

“Hey Alli!”

Vanessa responded, gaining a gasp from the other end of the line after a moment or two,

“Ness! Wow it has been a while since we have spoken. Where have you been, girl?”

she questioned though Vanessa seemed to become tongue-tied for a short while after this, her phone settled in her hands but not particularly gripped firmly as if she was about to drop it.

“Ness?”

“I’ve been at home, in my room.”

She quickly responded as her friend snapped her out of her almost trance-like state,

“In your room? What? Why?”

her friend started questioning which ended up making Vanessa’s head feel clouded for a second,

“Look, it’s complicated alright? Point is that I am out, were you up for hanging out or not Allison?”

she questioned before instantly getting a response,

“Of course, Ness! I’ll be there to pick you up in ten.”

She warned before the phone hung up

She warned before the phone hung up. Vanessa clutched her phone in a tight grip before taking a deep breath to calm herself and putting her phone back into her bag, putting on a smile and trying to remind herself that today was a new day and that she was going to try her hardest to make it different than the other days... A good one.

About fifteen minutes later an old red convertible rolled up outside of her house with the window down, Vanessa recognised the car as Allison’s dad’s car.

“You’re late.”

Vanessa joked, walking and leaning on the door, her arms folded where the window should be,

“Yeah! I know. Some police cars cut me off, there were like six of them all going past me down main road and they looked to be going out of town towards Haddonfield.”

Allison spoke, obviously confused by what she had witnessed yet a tone of childish curiosity glinting in her eyes,

“That’s odd.”

Vanessa stated before getting a reaffirming nod from her friend,

"Anyway are you getting in or what, Loser?”

Allison teased in a playful manner, Vanessa simply chuckled and nodded before sliding around to her side and getting in,

“Yeah, yeah. So where to?”

Vanessa questioned before Allison started up the car and drove out of the ditch onto the road,

“I am taking you to a party, since you are finally out of your hobbit hole, you shut-in."

Allison laughed which also ended up getting a small laugh out of Vanessa,

“A party? Really? Alli, you know I don’t like that sort of stuff.”

She partially whined, knowing that the teenagers that lived in Collingswood were the kind to just get drunk for the sake of getting drunk and somehow finding it fun which Vanessa never seemed to understand. Allison only seemed to smirk once she noticed Vanessa’s contemplating gaze,

“Come on Ness, Nessa... Nessy.”

She spoke, each nickname bringing on more and more of a baby-like voice. Vanessa rolled her eyes before laughing once again and giving in,

“Fine, but only if you stop with that stupid voice.”

Allison laughed and saluted, still holding onto the steering wheel with one hand and keeping her eyes on the road,

“Yes, Captain!”

Vanessa smiled before leaning her elbow up on the door while the windows were still down and looking out to watch the cluster of houses go by one by one, the trees letting their loose leaves float gently down onto the pathway that paved underneath their swaying branches; her eyes caught the gazes of small children who were playing outside on their lawns with sticks or a ball or just the grass and just... Being kids.

She felt the cool breeze brush through her hair, her hand coming up from by the window to hold her beanie in place as they drove, she seemed to find herself in simple bliss from the calm surroundings that her own hometown brought to her
