I rubbed my head with one hand and held my fork with the other, playing around with the weird smelling meatloaf on my plate. It almost resembled the bark of a tree, softened and with a layer of mould that no doubt meant the thing was over a month old.
Honestly, I had always intended to pack my own food before school started but since school was so precious to me, I had just never had the time – or effort – to make a sandwich. Of course, the consequence was ending up with the canteen's inedible meals that could probably put a person in hospital for weeks.
A tray slammed down in front of me, the clattering noise startling me from my thoughts and I glanced up, waving half-heartedly at my best friend.
"Girl, why do you look so stressed out?" I shrugged, smiling slightly at how Maddy was suddenly no longer ignoring me for lying to her before.
She rolled her eyes and slammed her hands down on the table, making me jump. "Well I have news!"
"Okay...?"
"There's a new guy!"
"... I know."
Maddy's eyes narrowed as she stared at me, placing her hands on her hips. "How do you know?"
"Why does it matter?" I stared at my best friend, sounding bored as I continued to play around with my death. And by death, I meant the food.
She smiled, her mood changing faster than I go through tissues when I'm sick, and bit on her lip, her eyes glazing over with lust. "He's hot. Like really fucking hot. Like walk all over me please because I'm going to worship at your feet hot!"
I rolled my eyes. Exaggerating much?
"And..." She continued with a squeal, "He is totally your type!"
I bit back the urge to laugh. Hah, she's totally lost it, I mean my type?
"Why do you look so constipated, Chrys?" I turned my head back, glaring at Charlie, who started to laugh at my annoyed expression. I flipped him off and he blew a kiss my way before returning the gesture. Mads just ignored the deadly looks we were giving each other and decided to inform her brother about the school's new eye candy.
Charlie didn't seem that interested, nodding casually while he listened to his sister without interruption.
When she paused to catch a breath, he turned to me with a knowing smirk, "Chrysie? Do you think the new eye candy is hotter than me?"
I choked on a fry that I had stolen from Maddy's plate, coughing and spluttering as I hit my chest with the palm of my hand. He burst out laughing again and this time Mads joined in, so I glared at them both, drinking sips of water until my little fit ended.
"No, I don't." He grinned, but I hadn't finished yet. "Because you were never hot to begin with – and I doubt the new kid is any hotter. We know Maddy has a tendancy to exaggerate."
"Hey! That's not tru-" I held up a hand, silencing her and raised my eyebrows.
"What about the time that Johnny ended up going to the nurse because of a paper cut, three years ago? You made it out that the kid was going to die from blood loss!"
Maddy glared, but remained quiet, knowing that I was right about this, until something from behind me caught her eye.
Her lips tilted into a smirk and she nodded at whatever was behind me, "Maybe if you saw him Chrys, you might change your mind."
So he was behind me. Great. Well I was going to have to see the kid I'm going to tutor sooner or later, so why the hell not?
I turned around.
And regretted it instantly.
