Ruby sat on the edge of the stairs watching the argument in the living room. Night had fallen over the village and everyone sat in front of the fire, except for herself, Qrow, and the missing Rayne. She sighed as she turned to look at Qrow, trying to tune out the argument between Yang and David and Oscar.
"What do you mean you lost him!? I gave you one job!"
Ruby shook her head as she approached her uncle, he looked out of the window at the shattered moon with a half-empty bottle of booze on the floor next to him. She looked at the bottle with distaste before attempting to speak to him, however, he spoke first. "Storm's cleared up for now. We should be able to leave by morning."
"That's good," Ruby said.
"No," He said. "I don't feel good about this place. Especially with me around."
She took a pause, "Are you ok?" She asked slowly.
He let out a dry chuckle, "Heh, sure." He said sarcastically. "Tell everyone to get some sleep, I'll wake you before sunrise. Maybe Rayne will be back by then."
Ruby turned solemnly toward the living room and began her trek back.
"It's a diary?" Oscar asked Maria as Yang had finally calmed down at the mention that it was the old lady's fault they had their backs turned.
"From the homeowner, Bartleby. He and his family founded this little settlement to try and live on their own. It sounds like it worked. At least, for a spell." She said.
"Grimm?" David asked.
"One of their many hardships. Slowed down their farming, it made everything harder. It's a shame really, he seemed like an ambitious fellow. Always thinking of new schemes to overcome the odds."
"Hey guys," Ruby interjected as she entered the room. "Qrow said we should get some sleep. We're heading out early tomorrow."
"Thank goodness," Blake said as her and the others stood to get ready for bed.
Maria scoffed, "I'll be damned if some little kid tells me what to do." She sat down in a chair in the corner and turned on the light. "Go to bed she mocked."
Ruby rolled her eyes and moved to help the others.

It was the middle of the night and they had all fallen asleep in the sleeping bags, taking up the entire living room floor. Yang slept in her bag next to Ruby, that is until a creaking woke her up. Yang had always been a heavy sleeper, but ever since Adam, she woke up to the slightest noise that her subconscious thought could be a threat.
Her lilac eyes shot open as she heard the creaking grow closer and then further as if walking around, looking for something. She slid out of her bag and clenched her fists, quietly preparing for a fight. She snuck around everyone before walking out into the main hall. From the kitchen, she could see a light.
Her eyes squinted as she tiptoed into the kitchen, she rounded the corner quickly and silently only to find... nothing.
She dropped her stance only a bit before she saw a flash of black in her peripheral vision. She swung a fist and impacted flesh, it was Adam. Her eyes turned red as her hair began to glow as she threw a flurry of punches.
The hits were all dodged or blocked before her metal arm was grabbed and she was pulled into a chokehold. She barely struggled as her enhanced strength gave her the power to pull out of the grip before a voice called out to her, "Yang? What are you doing? What the hell happened to your arm?"
Her eyes turned back to their normal color as her hair extinguished. Her back was turned but she knew what she heard, she turned around and saw a tall figure, holding their now red cheek. "R-Rayne!" She whispered. "I'm so sorry!"
