I heard a knock on my apartment door, I looked at the clock on my wall. 10:00pm. 'Who would come here this time?' As I headed to the door I grab my metal bat that was leaning on the wall by my bedroom door. I slowly open the door only to see a little girl, who seems to be around 10 years old, with black hair and was wearing jeans and a plain white t-shirt. "Um, can I help you?" I asked her still having the door halfway opened in case someone was using her like a trap. "Hi, are you Alex Waverly?"

I looked around the hallway, trying to see if someone was with the little girl. "Ah, yeah, who are you?" The girl smiled brightly.

"My names Maya, I'm your daughter" I looked at her with confusion and shock. I shook my head, "no, no, I'm sorry you seem to have the wrong person"

"No, I don't think so," she says looking down at a piece of paper then looks back up to me, "you had a daughter you gave for adoption 10 years ago, didn't you?" Before I could say anything else she pushes her little body pass me and goes into the apartment. "Hey, wait, what-"

"You were in North Carolina when you had me, weren't you? And so, that proves it" she said as she plops on the swivel chair

"Ok, kid, that's it I'm calling the cops," I said heading to my phone

"I'll tell them you kidnapped me" as she swivels back and forth in the chair

"Oh, sweet, because I'm your birth mom, you know it's bad to lie to an officer, right?"

"Yeah"

"Ok, then, where's your adopted parents, I'm sure they're worried"

"I don't have any" I stopped as my phone was in my hands.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean no one adopted me"

"No one?" All that she did was shake her head. Silence fell between us, "Oh" was all I can say. The raven-haired 10 years old just nodded, but then looked up at me, "but now I found you" she exclaimed.

"Ok, let's just say I am your mom," I told her as I sat on the couch next to her chair, "how did you manage to find me"

"I did a DNA test with my friend who was also looking for her birth parents" she explained, "we raised enough money to buy the kit for two. I'm surprised we weren't caught, but we did it. That's how I found you"

I just nodded, processing every word she said. I stood up, "ok, um, I- I have to go take a call. One minute" I snatch my phone and made my way up to my room and shut the door as I dialed the numbers. I have to take this kid back.
