Virgil POV
Let me take you to a far away land, one that you have never seen nor ever will see. A land of kings, knights, and witches. Where mermaids play in sky colored water and dragons hunt through emerald green forests. Everywhere you go, it looks as though one of the old masters had painstakingly designed, carved, and painted every bit of scenery.
This is where our story begins. Let us fly over the streams where naiads lurk, through the fields hiding will-o-the-wisps, and forests filled with centaurs to a small valley hidden in the mountains. The nearby peak looks like a giant took a cudgel to it, and the shrapnel scattered across the little valley. It didn't seem too unlikely. Giants were known for their short tempers.
The valley is actually a small group of valleys, known collectively as the Broken Vales. To the outside world, this is known as the home to malicious monsters and wraiths, a place where no man ever returns. The townspeople at the base always spoke of the mountains with reverence and fear, warning people away from the dangerous peaks. "It's a death sentence." They told one another.
In some ways, they were right. Men that were unfortunate enough to wander near the Broken Vales never returned. They were nearly always killed, and those that survived didn't return home. But the women? Oh, the women are the ones who survive. They are the ones who find a pleasant surprise waiting to greet them: a coven of witches.
This particular coven is known as the Coven of the Rising Star. It is home to some of the most powerful witches of the known world. It is also home to me, Virgil.
