Virgil's POV

I reached one shaking hand out and yanked the knife out of my table, almost falling over backward as it released. I steadied myself and studied the blade in my hand, horror growing the longer I looked at it.

It was a wickedly sharp weapon on the sides and blunt on the end. I assumed this was because it allowed for more power when throwing the knife. The blade was as heavy as the handle, which made it easier to throw accurately. It was mostly unadorned, with a black handle and straight blade. But there was a green and black mark on the side of the handle, a mark that I didn't recognize. Inside the shape of an anchor there was the outline of a crescent moon and a tower, as well as other, less recognizable shapes.

The knife had been angled toward the window as though someone had thrown it as they hid outside. Heart warily followed me as I pulled aside my black curtains and peered over the windowsill. Below me, in the mud, was a path of footprints leading away into the night. I exchanged looks with Heart. I was angry and upset. The person who had thrown this knife had completely destroyed my mothers's pendant, an object that had gotten me through my years in the Coven. Before my powers had increased, I would NEVER have considered doing what I was about to do. I hopped out the window to follow the tracks.

Heart followed me out the window as I traipsed after the trail of footprints. I was grateful that the ground was so soft, because I would never have been able to track them with my incompetence. The tracks led away from the coven and into the maze of broken boulders outside the village. I felt a little anxiety build up in my chest as we got out of sight of my hut, but I pushed it down. We could always follow the footprints back and out of the maze.

After about five minutes of walking, I realized that Heart's aura was very afraid and felt as though it were throwing blue sparks, but it followed me anyway. As we walked, I signed 'You don't need to follow me. I can manage on my own'. Heart shook itself in a definite NO.

I gave it a worried look, but in that moment the something changed. We stopped abruptly as the tracks seemed to disappear. I crouched and studied the ground where the footprints stopped. Then I looked around to see if they had jumped away or something, but there was nothing. There were other random marks, like bird tracks or a snake slithering past, but no human footprints.

I grunted in anger and stomped petulantly. Heart turned to me. Even though it couldn't make expressions, its angle seriously just said "Calm down and stop being childish." I rolled my eyes. 'Okay, dad' I thought scornfully.

'What should we do?' I signed to the little broom. It made a little motion back toward my hut. 'We could go home and sleep' it seemed to suggest. I huffed in irritation, but there didn't seem to be any other option. So we turned back and began the slow walk back. Well, it was a slow walk for me. It was more like a slow float for Heart.

We were almost within sight of my hut when I heard something. I froze; Heart went another couple feet before realizing I wasn't with it. It turned back to look at me, confused. I could barely breathe as I listened closely. It sounded like...singing? The longer I listened, the louder it became until it was a roaring in my ears. Seven minor notes, over and over, ethereal and beautiful. I closed my eyes as it filled my whole being as it swelled and receded like rain.

I stood there for a moment, swaying in the wind of the song, allowing it to fill me up with its power. It seemed to play with my newfound magic, activating and breathing with me. I didn't notice Heart's concerned tapping of my shoulders. I didn't notice when I started humming along. And I certainly didn't notice when my feet started walking.

Author's Note: N.E.R.D here. Sorry about the short chapter. Don't worry, I'm still working on it. I just had to finish a huge paper for one of classes, and it has been stressful!

Also, if you're wondering, Logan is at home, asleep. We won't be hearing from him for a couple chapter.

Love you guys <3
