Virgil's POV

After what seemed like hours (but was probably only a couple minutes), the dark pressure around me released me and I gasped as I was suddenly able to breathe. Cozbi's hand disappeared from around my wrist, leaving my body free to collapse on the hard, cold ground; I continued to gasp for air, gulping it gratefully like a drowning person. Reflexively, my eyes teared up; the dim light coming from somewhere nearby seemed unendurable after the pitch blackness from before. I closed my eyes, feeling Heart's disorientation from beside me as it floated down to the ground.

After a moment, I became aware of two things. One, I didn't seem to be in any immediate danger from Cozbi, who I could just barely sense standing nearby. I cracked open one eye and saw her standing over me, looking away. Two, as I looked around, I saw that I was on the ground of a dark cave, which was illuminated by glowing, steaming pools scattered about the chamber. It cast a rainbow of colors through the shadows, creating a comforting appearance.

However, there was a very disturbing aura that belied the peaceful lights. It felt dark, sticky, and corrupt; it set my nerves on edge and made my heart pound wildly. It seemed to permeate everything, preventing me from pinpointing where it was originating from. The strange part was that it didn't seem to be coming from Cozbi. Her aura was oddly...vacant. She stood stock still nearby, as stiff as a board. Her features had gone slack into a neutral expression, but her eyes were despairing as she looked at me. Her quintessence was so fuzzy and blank that I felt myself wanting to sleep.

'Careful.' The Protector whispered in my ear. I jumped; I'd forgotten he was there and his voice still unsettled me. 'There is something dangerous in this chamber.' For once, his voice wasn't snide or mocking. He seemed genuinely concerned for my wellbeing, which at first flattered me. Then I realized that he would probably die as well, since I hadn't activated the Portal yet or named a successor. I berated myself inwardly for being self-centered.

I stood up shakily and Heart was at my side in an instant, a little wobbly as well. Cozbi still didn't move and I elected to ignore her. The humidity and heat from a nearby pool made my bangs stick to my forehead and caused my face to flush. I hurriedly took a step back and welcomed the cold air that cooled my skin.

That's when I heard it. A sharp whisper in my ear. "Boo!"

Author's Note: You guys are so awesome! I hope you'll be patient while I put this on hiatus. I swear I'm coming back! I just need some time so I can get past this busy time of school and stuff. ;) I will continue to write during that time, I just won't be posting it. I'll be going at my own leisurely pace and editing it without the stress. <3
