~Chapter 3~

Heather's POV

After Ruth sent me downstairs I felt so uncomfortable that I decided to leave. As I was pulling out of her street I looked at my jacket, something seemed off. There was a red light so I took it off to examine it. That's when I realized, this wasn't my jacket. I then decided to retrace my steps.

I went to Ruth's room and saw the picture of us on her nightstand. I took off my jacket because it was hot in there. I went to the picture, picked it up, got spooked, and decided to leave and in my haze, I probably took her leather jacket instead. How did I not notice that when I put it on?

I quickly made a U-turn and went back to Ruth's house. I went inside and luckily didn't see her so I quickly went to her room and saw my jacket exactly where I had left it. I placed hers back, took mine, and left again without being spotted by Ruth.

When I got home I went straight to my room and thought of the picture. Why would she still have that? And to the greater question, why was I circled? I thought to myself. After a time of thinking, I decided to just drop it for now and went to sleep.

~~~~~~
When I woke up I was still exhausted, I only woke up because there was some fierce banging on my door. I went to the door and looked through the hole. My heart instantly started beating hard and fast in my chest when I saw the people who were banging on the door.
"Open the door, Miss. Fields" the police officer said. I was so scared I didn't move. Since I didn't respond they forced themselves into my apartment. They told me to sit down on my kitchen chair and answer some of their questions.
"Where were you yesterday night?" he questioned.
"At a party. Wait what is this even about?" I asked, still in shock.
"There was a robbery at the Brown's residence last night and you are our prime suspect at the moment as there is a witness who saw you commit the crime." the police officer stated. Ruth's house I thought to myself. How could I be their number one suspect? Who saw what?
"Yes, Miss. Ruth's residence and because Miss. Ruth said she saw you last at the crime scene" I guess I must have said that out loud instead of inside my head I thought to myself.
"Where exactly was the scene of the robbery?" I asked.
"In the room of Mr & Mrs. Brown," he replied.
"Wait a minute, Ruth didn't allow me into that room I swear! I don't know what she is talking about!" I yelled. The officer completely ignored m. After a couple of minutes, one said that there was a missing necklace, it was silver and had a big sapphire diamond in the center. I knew what he was talking about. Mrs. Brown adored that necklace.
"I never took anything I swear," I said, my voice shaking.
"Well then you won't mind if we check out your apartment then?" the officer asked in a very cocky voice.
"Go right ahead" I replied.
After an hour or so they finally finished and found absolutely nothing. They messed up every inch of my apartment, for absolutely nothing. They all left and said their apologies. I forgave them of course, it wasn't their fault they were misled by Ruth. I was truly baffled by everything. Ruth has become psychotic. No one sane could do this.
Ruth's POV
"We are sorry Miss. Brown, but Miss. Fields isn't the thief. Are you sure there wasn't anyone else that was in your parent's room during the time of the party?" the officer asked me.
"No, it was her for sure, I saw her with my own eyes!" I exclaimed, how did they not find the necklace!
"Is it possible that the necklace might still be in the house just not where you initially placed it?" he asked me, slightly annoyed.
"NO!" I yelled at him.
"Well, we are just going to have a look again. Just in case" he said in a stern tone.
"Fine! But you're not going to find it here!" I replied. All the officers went upstairs and I was left alone on the couch in my living room.
"How did they miss it?!" I asked myself. After a couple of minutes, I heard footsteps coming down the stairs. "See," I said to them as I turned around to face them. But as I did, I noticed one of them had my leather jacket.
"Hey! What are you doing with my jacket?!" I asked in a demanding voice.
"This is your jacket right?" the police officer asked.
"Yes, why?" I asked very confusedly. They pulled something shiny from the pocket and asked, "Is this the necklace?" My eyes widened in surprise. What! I thought to myself.
"Looks like this case is closed. Next time don't waste our time or I'll take you down to the station." He said in an angry voice. They all left and I started screaming. "HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!?" I yelled to no one in particular. All I knew right now is that I wanted to hurt Heather, and I was determined to do it.
