Well this is gonna be harder than I thought.
Phil watches Dan as he storms out of the dining hall. He figures that last night was a good thing, they talked for almost an hour before going back to sleep. He didn't really get any information about Dan himself but at least he was talking and joking. Seemed like improvement.
But this is not going well. The improvement is gone and now Dan is also mad at him.
"I told you so."
Phil turns around to see the kid from yesterday standing there. Not this guy again.
"What did you tell me so?" Phil shrugs, blankly staring at the boy.
The kid looks past Phil and points at the door Dan just walked out. "Everyone switches rooms. The dude is a nutcase."
"I'm not gonna switch rooms." Phil says in a monotone voice and puts his tray on the pile on top of the trashcan.
"Dude? You're serious? He just totally yelled at you in front of everybody!" The kid acts genuinely shocked.
"Look, listen here... uh... Adam?" Phil asks.
"It's Alan actually, but don't worry about it." He smiles.
God this kid is annoying.
"Yeah whatever. Look, I'm not gonna switch rooms and I'm not really interested in building a friendship or something like that." Phil says and walks past Alan towards the other exit.
"Alright, that's totally cool." Phil hears him follow him.
"But it seems like your cellmate is not gonna talk to you and I assume you're gonna wanna know where the game room is and which hours you can go outside and where the showers are." Alan continues.
Phil just keeps walking. "I'm sure I can figure it out."
"You smoke?" Alan asks, he sounded interested, like he actually wanted to help.
Phil stops in his tracks and waits until Alan comes in front of him. "You can get cigarettes?" he raises his eyebrows. This kid doesn't seem like the break the rules kind of kid, but then again, he is in jail.
"Well not me, but I know someone who can." Alan smiles again. It falls silent for a second as Phil stares impatiently at Alan.
"Are you gonna take me to him or are we gonna keep standing here?"
"Oh, right!" Alan starts walking again, continuing their path down the hall. "This way!"
This dude might actually be helpful.
"His name is Brian, he's been here for five months already, which means everybody knows him. His parents are very rich, so he has like connections or something."
Alan turns left, and points at the wall. "Here are the phones by the way, if you want to call home. Anyway, Brian can get his hands on a lot of things. One time he even had a few joints, and I got to take like two drags, it was so cool."
Suddenly Alan stops walking and points at a door. "He is usually in this room with his friends in the morning, he rarely ever goes to breakfast. The rumor is he gets his own food too, but nobody knows for sure."
Phil looks through the window next to the door, he sees a piano, a few couches and a few guys sitting on them. He can only see the backs of their heads.
"Brian is very specific in who he likes and trusts. If he does like you, you still have to do things in return for the stuff he gets you."
"What kind of things?" Phil stands on his tippy toes, trying to get a better view in the room.
"Depends. Most of the time you have to do his chores, sometimes he wants information, or he wants you to smuggle something in or out." Alan shrugs. "It could be anything really."
"Alright." Phil nods. "Let's go in."
"Cool!" Alan smiles, before knocking on the door.
"Yeah?" Phil hears a voice from behind the door.
Alan opens the door and peeks his head through. "Hi Brian!" he exclaims.
"Alan! Come in dude!" the voice sounds excited.
Phil follows Alan into the room and quickly scans it with his eyes. On the two couches there are three guys, two of them very typical wanna be bad boys, but it is very obvious who is in charge here.
The guy who is sitting on his own on the bigger couch is wearing a watch, Phil guesses it's a rolex but he isn't close enough to be sure, and different shoes than the rest of them. The shoes are the same grey color as the sneakers everybody gets when they come here, probably to not raise suspicion, but they are obviously Nike's.
But even if he was dressed exactly the same as everyone else, the way he is sitting, the look he gives Alan, the way the other guys watch him carefully, this guy clearly doesn't take shit from anyone.
"Alan my friend!" He stands up and gives Alan a typical bro hug. Alan has the broadest smile on his face, it's very obvious that he looks up to Brian and that he feels very cool being near him. Lame.
"Who's your buddy?" Brian nods towards Phil. Buddy? Oh hell no.
"This is Phil." Alan makes a "come here" gesture at Phil. "He arrived yesterday evening."
Phil walks over to Brian, who eagerly shakes his hand immediately.
"Phil, it's nice to meet you. My name is Brian." His handshake is strong and firm, and just a little painful, which Phil guesses is deliberate.
"Yeah you too." Phil tries to stay confident, but he has to admit, this dude is a little intimidating.
"Sit down." Brian points at the couch he was just sitting on. Not a question. Phil thinks to himself so he just nods and sits down, so does Brian.
Alan walks towards the spot on the other side of where Brian is sitting, but Brian quickly holds his hand up to stop him. "Uh, Alan." he raises his eyebrows and then nods at the other couch, where the other two guys are sitting.
Alan awkwardly shifts towards the other couch, clearly embarrassed. This dude is good, really good.
"These are my two good friends, Vince and Randall." Brain says and both the guys says hi.
"Hi." Phils nods at them.
"So tell me Phil, how is your first full day here going so far?" Brian asks.
"Pretty good." Phil leans back on the couch. Look relaxed, like you don't have a care in the world. "Haven't seen anything I can't handle." Phil grins.
Brian laughs. "That's what I like to hear. Most guys are scared shitless when they first get here."
Phil shrugs. "Yeah, luckily there aren't a lot of things that scare me." Phil raises an eyebrow at Brian, whose smile falters and squints his eyes slightly.
"Right..."
