"you know i would have brought a pillow if I knew this assembly would take so damn long" leighton said as she yawned. "lay on my shoulder, i'm assuming you couldn't sleep last night?" ricky asked as he felt weight on his shoulder. a warm feeling spreading through him.

"no, i think i was a little upset my dad wasn't here to see me on a first day of school. he's never going to be here again, guys." she said, feeling a hand rub her back and looking up to see big red sending her a smile.

"if it helps, i couldn't sleep either. there was an odd smell in my room. i still haven't found what it was." big red said in hopes to cheer his friend up. ricky and leighton shared a look of disgust as the principal's voice echoed through the gym speaker.

it was just the rules of the school year and how seniors can wear baseball hats in fridays. like she said. boring. she glanced around with her head still on ricky's shoulder for her sister who said she would see her there.

the brunette was wildly waving at leighton from a good distance in the gym with her senior class and her friends. this caused leighton to giggle at how weird her sister was being.

suddenly a new drama teacher was given the microphone just as ricky asked big red why things have to change.

"some things never change dude, i've been wearing the same socks for three days" the red head said like it was nothing.

"oh dude. i think i know what smells in your room now." leighton said as she removed her head off ricky's shoulder, him losing the warmth of her as she slid over on the bleachers. followed by ricky. both disgusted with their friend's choices.

"go wildcats!" the new teacher shouted as she discussed her shock of the school never doing a production of high school musical. leighton listened closely to the announcement of auditions being held for the musical tomorrow after the last class.

the brunette promised herself she would take up new things this school year. she really meant softball or track but a musical couldn't hurt. she has been looking for a reason to play piano again lately.

"i think i'm gonna go for it guys." she said excitedly. knowing the boys didn't care for musicals, but they supported pretty much everything she did anyways. before she could get a response from either, the bell rang as the end of the assembly.

"see you guys at lunch!"

"dude are you seeing this?" big red asked as ricky responded with "i'm seein' it, hearin' it and i'm hatin' it."

"boys, what are we hating here? ooh fries." leighton said as soon as she sat down at the lunch table. directing her vision to where theirs was.

"oh, guys stop staring so hard. they're gonna catch on fire with that harsh stare ric." the girl said as big red was incredibly amazed at how ricky's ex was dating a senior who just so happened to go to the same camp as her that summer.

getting ignored by her friends, leighton continued to sneak fries from the tray in front of ricky. "apparently the odds are exceptionally good!" ricky frustratedly said as he softly smacked leighton's hand from the fry plate.

"once again, you can not be mad at her for finding someone else. i mean you broke up with her. sure, maybe you said you always talked to her but you told me she sounded annoyed with you up until a few days ago." the only girl said as ricky sighed hating to admit she was right.
