Another job is another city, another house, and another school. Just like that. It loops back and forth pretty much every year, I'm used to it.
Today I thought I'd check out a library, reading is really the only thing I don't have to leave behind every year. You wouldn't think a typical 17 year old guy in 2014 would like to read but I guess you. Outd say I'm weird like that. Once I go in there are a million books, then I realize I'm not in some small town, I'm in California, there must be a million more books in this library than there were in the last library, and the last, and so on. I should really stop saying that to myself. 'I'm in California, I'm in California'. It probably won't be anything different from the last cities. I shouldn't get my hopes up.
I don't really care to ask anyone what to do, I feel like I don't need to anyways. So I did what anyone does at a library, grab a book, sit down, and read it. I decided that I wanted to look at "Conform". It was this new book that was about politics that I'd been wanting to read for a long time, and hopefully no one who I'd be going to school with saw me read my loser book.
Five minutes or so into my reading, a girl walks up to me as if I'm Justin Bieber or something.
"OMG! Is that Conform?" she said. Phew! I thought she was gonna attack me.
"Yeah, you've heard of it?" I asked.
"Well, it's only the best politics book I've ever read!" she exclaimed. The librarian shushed us. She came over and sat next to me.
"I thought I was the only one literally all of Orange County who actually enjoyed this kind of stuff." I laughed.
"I'm Megan, I'm a junior at Laguna High." Seriously? A politics friend who goes to my school? Hell yeah.
"Same. Brenton."
"How come I haven't seen you before, Brenton?" she asked.
"I'm new."
"Well, Brenton, I'm glad I met you before school started so I can invite you to this party tomorrow night to kick off the school year," she said. A party? Already. I wouldn't say I had it good just yet.
"A party? I wouldn't know anybody." You wouldn't think an almost 18-year old guy would feel that way about going to a party, but I'm pretty shy.
"C'mon, I'll introduce you to everybody?" she said. She would not give up.
"I'll think about it." I said, unsure if I was willing to do that.
"I'll take that, I guess," she said. After that we talked for a whole hour about everything in "Conform".
"You know, if you do go to the party - which you should. I need to introduce you to this girl."
"A girl, already?" I exclaimed jokingly.
"Seriously, though. I think you'll like her," she said. I actually hoped so. Maybe I would go to this party. See what it brings me._____________________________________________________________
I get into my car and sit at the wheel for a couple of seconds. Really? Should I? I turn on the engine of the car and drive away.
I get to the party. It's on this really huge hill that when I drive down it I almost ruined my brakes. The house, much like the ones surrounding it, all had this modern, minimalistic style, but with a slightly homey feeling.
I hop out of the car and walk in through the gate in the back. I try to look for Megan as quick as I can so know one notices me.
"Brenton!" she screams. She runs up to me, holding someone's hand. He was this really tall guy who looked kind of irritated that she was pulling him, I could still tell she was his girlfriend.
"You came! Yay!" she says. She looked really high on sugar rather than other things.
"Oh! Brenton, Ivan. Ivan, Brenton."
"Okay, let me call her!" She shouts over to a girl standing on the edge of the dancefloor talking to some guy.
"Reese!" yelled Megan, "Come here!" As soon as "Reese" turned her head over to us. My heart stopped. She had curled sandy blond hair with highlights and slightly tanned skin. Here eyes were a pretty light brown color. Her dress was pink and purple tye-dye in an A-line shape with a baggy gray cardigan over it. She came over to our group.
"Hey!" she said.
"Reese, this is Brenton. He's new," she said sounding proud of herself. She was really trying to set us up.
"Hi. I'm Reese."
"Brenton." That is such a great name.
"Do you wanna dance?" she said. Yes.
"Uh, yeah, sure," I said, trying to sound cooler and less desperate. She took my hand and kind of pulled me to the dance floor. As she was pulling me away from Megan and Ivan, I mouthed to Megan, "Thank you." She smiled.
"So you're new right?" she said.
"Um, yeah," he said. I sounded like a nervous wreck.
"Yeah, sorry, I know, I mean, um, where are you from?" she said.
"New York, I've been going back and forth between coasts all my life because of my dad's job," I said.
"Cool," she said. This got awkward fast.
