My eyes slowly open. The room is dark and quiet, the only source of light coming from behind the slightly opened door.
I scan the room after wiping the sleep from my eyes and they fall upon a sleeping figure. Their long blonde hair is in a messy pony tail and their curled up body is balancing on the small chair next to my bed.
It's Harlow.
I open my mouth to speak but nothing comes out, it's so dry and raw. I look around the room to try and see if there is some water anywhere, but there isn't. As I search the room, I realise that I'm not in the hospital room that I was in before. Strange.
Defeated, I sit myself up in the bed and stretch my arms and legs. I then lean over to the sleeping figure and lightly shake her awake.
"Mmh, no... Go away Alonzo," She yawns while slapping my hand away.
Who's Alonzo?
I smile slightly and shake her again, this time a little harder. "Ugh go away, I'm sleeping," She groans.
Giving up, I send a light punch to her shoulder which sends her falling to the floor. I surprised myself, I didn't think I'd have the strength to do that considering I've just been in hospital. Maybe she was balancing very carefully.
"What the fuck Alonzo why would you-," Harlow cuts herself off when she looks around the room and her eyes land on me. A smile sprouts on her face and she tackles me into a hug, "Oh my God! You're awake! Holy cow, I've missed my best friend so much!"
I wince as she starts shouting with excitement, and she must have noticed because she pulls away from me with a worried look on her face, "I'm so sorry Nancy! Did I hurt you?"
I shake my head, no, and then motion with my hand for a drink. Her eyes widen slowly and she exits the room, and I can only assume that she's gone to get me a drink.
While she's gone I start to wonder about this Alonzo person, who is he? I've never heard of an Alonzo before, maybe he's new? Maybe she's finally looking for somebody else to nag bar me? She's going to be in for a treat when she gets back, because I won't stop firing the questions at her.
"Here you go," Harlow states as she enters the room. In her hand is a tall glass of water, and in the other is a plate with some toast, "The doctor said that you should eat some buttered toast as soon as you wake up."
She hands them over to me and I start to gulp down the drink, I then set it aside after half of it is gone.
"Thank you," I say, "I really needed that."
"How are you feeling?" She wonders while taking a seat back at the chair.
"Surprisingly I feel quite okay. I'm not aching or anything like I was the last time I woke up," I explain while biting into the warm toast, "Please don't tell me I've been asleep for another five weeks, I don't think my body could handle that."
She lets out a laugh and she shakes her head at me, "No, no. Don't worry. You've only been asleep for a couple of days."
I stare at her with an 'oh' expression on my face. We stay in silence for a few minutes as I eat my toast, and I think Harlow is trying to think of what to say. And no longer than five minutes later, she speaks up.
"We were all worried about you, you know? When you never came home that night. Nobody knew where you were," She begins while fiddling with her fingers, "When you were brought into the hospital the doctors put you into a medically induced coma because you were badly injured and your body wouldn't have been able to heal if you were awake... But you slept for a further two weeks which was unusual, but eventually you did wake up."
She looks at me in the eye, as if asking me if she should continue. I nod my head for her to go on.
She lets out a breath of air, "Shortly after you woke up, you went back to sleep again. I don't know if you remember that or not seeing as it was only for a short period of time, but you did. Anyway, the doctor came back to assess you and ended up giving you a small sedative just so that you're brain could rest up for a few more days. And now, here we are."
I take a look around the room now that the bedside table light is on. From what I can gather I'm in some sort of guest room. It's all white and clean, but there's a carpeted floor and the bed I'm in is much more comfortable.
"Where exactly is here?" I wonder.
Harlow's eyes widen ever so slightly before she speaks, "I think that your parents are going to come and explain everything to you in a bit, but for now you need to rest."
I don't bother questioning her about where I am, because I know that I'm safe with her here and my parents. My mind switches to the Alonzo person that she was muttering about earlier. A cruel smile appears on my face and Harlow looks at me with a confused look.
"So then," I begin, "Who is Alonzo?"
