The sun shines through the blinds of my room, pouring its way over me and onto the messy floor. My eyes squint as I sit up in my bed, trying to adjust to the familiar brightness. A groan escapes my lips as I slide my legs out of bed and stand up, my back aching due to an archery class gone wrong the previous day. I search my room for my slippers and wriggle my feet into them once they are found. My eyes wonder over to my fuzzy blue dressing gown and I pick it up, wrapping it around my slim frame.
I look over at my nightstand and at the flashing numbers on the clock.
07:48.
Looks like the early bird catches the worm again.
After unplugging my phone I leave my bedroom and walk down the hallway, making sure not to wake anyone when I start going down the stairs. I eventually reach the kitchen and turn on the lights, making a beeline towards the kettle. I quickly fill it up to the top and put it back on its stand, waiting for it to boil. As it begins to hum I grab the milk out of the fridge and the Special K out of the cupboard. My standard breakfast in the making. After the kettle boils I make my cup of tea and pour the milk onto my cereal, putting everything away straight after. I am a messy person, but I cannot stand to see anything left out in the kitchen.
I sit myself down at the island and scroll through social media as I enjoy my breakfast. As I am scrolling through my IG feed a photo of me and my sister appears, posted by my brother.
They are actually my adopted siblings but I have grown up with them my whole life and none of us think about the 'adopted' part of it anymore.
My parents have been honest with me since I could start understanding things, they never wanted me to find out about my history when I was older because they thought that I would leave and be furious with them. In all honesty I don't know what I would have done if that was the case, I probably would have been too confused to do anything at all.
My mum and dad, Joanne and Tom, adopted me when I was a few weeks old after being abandoned at a fire station. They tell me that after their first child, also known as my brother Brandon, they struggled to conceive again because apparently my mum had a 'hostile' uterus, or whatever that means. But shortly after adopting me they were surprised to find out that they were expecting. I think they would have been shocked, and I think they had felt guilty at the time because they had just adopted me, but everything worked out and my little sister Emily was introduced to the world.
Brandon is twenty now and he works with our dad for the family business, a building business. My mum takes care of the financials for them but she is also a bookkeeper.
As for my sister Emily, she is currently studying public services. She aspires to be a nurse one day. This means that she is either always at the college library or is studying at home. She wants to do the best that she can and I admire her determination.
I am distracted from my thoughts when my mum walks into the room, "Morning love."
"Good morning, did you sleep well?" I wonder.
"Yes I did thanks, did you? I hope your back didn't give you too much trouble," She questions. Yesterday I was helping my old archery instructor teach some new students and I pulled a muscle in my back when I was pulling out the arrows from the targets.
"I went to sleep fine but it woke me up this morning," I reply smiling at her. She quickly passes me the box of paracetamol from the medicine cupboard and I thank her before taking two of the white tablets.
"Do you have any plans for today?" She questions while boiling the kettle again.
I finish off what is in my bowl before replying, "I'm not sure yet. I know for certain I need to put my old college books up for sale, but other than that I don't think I am up to anything."
"Well I'm going to town to pick up a few things if you're interested in tagging along?"
I mentally debate whether or not to join her on her shopping mission and think that I may as well, we haven't been spending much time together recently. "Sure thing. Just let me know when you're thinking of leaving and I'll get ready," I say while standing up.
My mum nods her head and makes her tea, then she exits the room with it and she goes into the living room and switches on the television. I put my dishes in the sink and also exit the kitchen and head back up to my bedroom.
I finished my college course a few weeks ago and I passed with flying colours, I was studying geography. But before I jump into job searching I want to see the world with my best friend Harlow, and my archery team. We have been close friends since primary school and we have always wanted to travel the world together, and now is our chance to do it before we have anymore responsibilities, and luckily for us an international archery offer opened up. But before we plan anything I was to clear out my room, sell some books that I won't be using anymore and make myself feel more like an adult. I am nineteen soon anyway.
I sift through my wardrobe in search for a decent outfit and end up deciding on a pair of blue jeans and a purple NY t-shirt. I quickly grab my towel and head towards the shower across the hall, locking the door behind me. The cold water makes me shiver as I turn on the shower, waiting for it to have its five seconds of coldness before the heat comes out. I strip out of my nightwear and hop into the shower, rinsing myself over.
As I squeeze some shower gel into my loofah I stare at my wrist. I have always wanted to get a tattoo but I've never had the courage to get one done. I know for a fact that I want to get the date that I was adopted on myself but I'm just nervous about it. Maybe one day.
After I wash myself I hop out of the shower and dry myself off, wriggling myself into my clothes. I put my nightwear into the washing basket in the bathroom and head back to my room. Once inside I stare at the mess on the floor. I know that I'm not an organised person and it does annoy me but I just can't help it. I start to clean up my room when someone knocks my door. I turn around and its my mum.
"Hey love I'm just getting ready and then we can leave if you want?" She states.
I throw some socks into my own washing basket and look over to her, "Yeah that's fine I'm ready whenever."
She leaves and closes the door behind her, and I continue tidying up. My black Adidas trainers peak out from under my bed and I quickly put them on my feet ready for when I need to leave. I work fast to clean my room and once I have done so I grab my bag with my purse in it and leave my room.
Once downstairs I head into the dining room and over to my friends, the three amigos. Wen, Jen and Len. My three fancy goldfish. I have had them for a few years now and they just keep getting bigger and bigger!
I open up the lid to their spacious two hundred litre aquarium and feed them some sinking pellets. They all swim downwards as fast as they can to get the food and they go crazy. They are so cute. I close the lid and sit down on one of the dining room chairs, admiring them. I need to upgrade their tank soon, they are all around six inches long now so they need the space. I got them from a pet store when they were only an inch long each. Since having fish I have come to realise that pet shops don't actually care about their well beings, they say you can keep them in an un-cycled bowl and that just astonishes me.
"Do you fancy driving Nancy?" I turn around to see my sister leaning against the door.
"Are you coming with us?" I ask.
"Yeah, thought I'd better tag along."
"Okay. And yeah that's fine I'll drive," I agree. I've just recently brought myself a new car, before it I had a cheap run around. But hey, wheels are wheels. I put the fish food away and leave the room, grabbing my keys from out of the bowl. Mum and Emily are all ready and waiting outside so I shut the door and lock it, walk down the path and meet them at my car. My new baby.
"Let's go then," I say as I unlock the car, "Shopping time it is."
