Mike Onno, age 32, 2025. As I stared on at my "civilization" of scrap metal houses, I felt relief. We had been gone for much longer than expected. While hunting Radstags, we were attacked by Mutants. Looking on from our distance made it seem so small in comparison, but no matter what happened, It was home to us. After one successful mission to rescue people from the "society" that the giant monsters created, we were comfortably at a population of 700 people. I was a salvager and hunter, which meant that every two weeks I went on a hunt to gather meat for the people. There were 20 hunting parties each with around 10 people in them. Every month, I would go out with 30 other people to salvage and scrap abandoned homes and bases for metals and useful items. Most of the people at home were managing the day to day operation of the society, cooking whatever was left in the food stores, cleaning up, or defending from mutant invasions. We had tried, on multiple occasions, to set up farms. It seemed that the lands were too contaminated. We had put much of our prior research into figuring out a way, but the cost of finding and using clean soil without ruining it would be too much upkeep. We had a plan that we were going to share with the whole colony. Ghrioxhis, the massive writhing pile of tentacles, was the guard of the city. If we could take it down, for a period of time, we could have easy access to free the enslaved people there. We had been collecting metal, engines, fuel, and other resources for a long time now. We were to create a force of planes that could fly high enough that Ghrioxhis could not attack us. We would have to be fast, as word would spread quickly. It was our only option, as any ground forces would be consumed by the monster without fail. 2 months later, we were ready to strike. We followed behind the planes, watching on at how they fair. Eventually, we spotted Ghrioxhis. Our planes quickly swooped in firing off rounds of their ammo and quickly backing off. The monster squirmed and squealed, emitting the most horrifying noises. Almost 200 meters, the massive blob of tentacles seemed to stand no chance. We were able to quickly attack at a high enough altitude that It could do nothing to fight back. The one thing that was strange was that, us, with scrap metal planes, could hurt this thing, but the military was not able to. Thats when it happened. The monster started moving wildly, launching its many tentacles out at our planes. It thrashed viciously, sending some of our planes flying in the opposite direction. We thought we would win, but we quickly realized that the monsters were far beyond our ability. Those who could still retreated, but we lost 6 of our 23 planes. Even though we had lost, this fight proved that we could at least damage the monsters. We trudged back home, not wanting to believe what just happened. Home was not a good sight this time.
