Prologue Into the Night

Rain pattered against the soft earth, causing ripples to dance on my feet. I bounded gracefully, the average eye unable to sense the war raging in my mind. This could be the last time I ever kill for that tyrant. A smile slid onto my sharp features. I only hoped it was enough.
I slowed to a walk, keeping to the shadows. I whispered a prayer of forgiveness. A ritual I had done since "employed" by the king. I listened closely as I approached the door, straining to hear past the silence. With my suspicions confirmed, I shifted into my animal, my other half. It was easier to live past the pain of killing if she did it. She had emotions. But hers were more black and white. All she knew was that this meant freedom. And nothing was going to stand in her way. Without hesitation, we broke down the door. I looked into his startled eyes, still blurry with sleep, before I slashed his throat with my paw, silencing his scream for eternity. Shifting back, I placed a white rose on his chest. My trademark. It had instilled fear throughout all of the kingdom. The Shadow Assassin has struck once more, it said. But never again.
