Drops of Death

Hunger. Starvation. Cruel steadfast thoughts that only deepened my yearning for food. After my howling stomach woke me from sleep for the tenth time, refusing to be ignored, I looked over at the guard I had nicknamed Godzilla. He had noticed the angry protests too, struggling to ignore them just as much as me.

I was starting to go mad, and that led only to desperation.

"P-Please."

I didn't have to say anything else, he knew what I meant. He seemed to contemplate it. I watched his face, a scene of flitting emotions.

"I haven't eaten in four days," I tried.

His face softened slightly, but I could tell he remained unconvinced.

The sun was beginning to stretch over the horizon, rays of light shining through the sparkling dew drops. The hunters began to stir, waking to the call of morning.

I looked back to Godzilla, relief covering his face. I turned to see what he was looking at and the blood froze in my veins. Thane. The sick monster I was going to kill.

He strode over, stopping when his shadow fell over my face. His eyes flicked over the two of us, cold and calculating.

"Do not speak to my men," he spat.

I opened my mouth to shoot back a sarcastic reply but it choked in my throat. I could feel my fingers trembling. Clenching them into fists, I struggled to hide the fear Thane had made sure to drill into me at even the whisper of his presence. His eyes raked over my body and the ghost of a smile took over his features.

"What was it you two were discussing?" Thane asked with terrifying calmness.

"She was asking for food, sir," Godzilla replied.

"And what did you tell her now, hmmm?"

"I didn't," he said simply.

Thane nodded his head up and down, my chances of food decreasing with each shake of his head. He began to rub his chin in thought. "Alright, gather up the men. Tell them to get their crossbows out and ready."

My brain seemed to shut down after the word crossbows was mentioned. What was he planning? My execution? No, that didn't seem right. But what else would need crossbows? All I knew was that I didn't want to find out.

Thane returned, his own crossbow in hand. I looked behind him to see all of the hunters gathered in a wide circle, each dawned with a wicked arrow. I searched their faces, looking for signs of remorse. Nothing but stone hard glares stared back. And then it hit me. Where was Draven?

I didn't have the time to think about that because the next thing I know I'm getting yanked to my feet by the chain attached to my throat. Cold eyes are almost level with mine before my legs collapse and I fall back to the floor.

"GET UP!" he screams.

Before I can blink he grabs the chain again and lifts me up. And boy does it hurt like hell. He releases it and I put my arm up against the tree for support.

"Here's how this is going to work, pet. I am going to take off these chains and you are going to fight. You will enter the middle of the circle and choose one of my men to battle against. If you win, you get three meals today. But if you lose," he said will a grin. "you get nothing."

I wanted to cry. There was no way I could win. All of his men where skilled fighters. I would have trouble if I was at the top of my game. I was the weakest I had ever been in years. He and I both knew I didn't stand a chance.

"Oh, and by the way. My boys have orders to shoot your pretty legs to shreds if you try and escape. Might want to keep that in mind," he smiled evilly.

That bastard. Fang growled.

An idea began to form at the sound of Fang's voice. It was stupid and would probably get me killed but I would die soon if I lost anyway. Thane began taking all of the chains off, starting with my ankles and working his way up. I crossed my fingers when he got to my collar. My whole plan depended on it. He detached the chain connected to the tree. I waited, my heart pounding in my ears. Thane stuck the key into the lock on my collar and I struggled to keep the smile off my face. My suspicions confirmed, I felt my spirits rise.

Thane didn't know what animal I shifted into. And he was about to find out.
