While walking up the steps to my room my younger sister stopped me.
"When is Harry coming over? He hasn't been over in a while. Are you guys still friends? You better still be friends."
Let's just say it was a little obvious my sister had a crush on Harry. It was ironic though because she's in the 6th grade.
"Yes Grace, we're still the best of friends. He's coming over tomorrow to pick me up for breakfast.
I trudged up the spiral staircase, exhausted from the fun I had with Campbell that night. I laid down in bed and thought how tomorrow I'm going to get up, make the most of all my days. For the first time in almost a year I felt genuinely happy.
I woke up to the sound of Harry and my sister blasting music from a speaker, standing over me in my bed.
"Wake up sleepy head, it's time for breakfast" Harry exclaimed.
My sister now on Harry's back joined in to the music playing and sang along. They started doing a weird but cute dance. I jumped out of bed and starting dancing. Harry and Grace left to let me get changed. I got dressed and ran down the stairs excited for a new day.
"Good morning everybody!" I told my family and Harry down in the kitchen.
"Wow someone's in a good mood!" My dad exclaimed clearly surprised.
Harry and I left the house and hopped in his car to go to breakfast. I saw Campbell taking up his trash can and asked Harry if he could join us.
"Please can he come? He's new to the neighborhood and doesn't know anyone."
Harry agreed. I rolled down the window and yelled to Campbell.
"Campbell were going to breakfast wanna come?"
After lots of persuading I got Campbell in the car and we were ready to go.
"Campbell this is Harry my best friend, and Harry this is Campbell my new neighbor."
I could tell they were gonna get along. The whole car ride they talked about hockey and how some guy was going to fight another guy. I had no idea what any of it meant. I got waffles at breakfast, Harry got an omelette, and Campbell got an egg sandwich. I was originally scared for this breakfast and was gonna cancel on Harry. I hadn't been ready to get out of the house, let alone leave my bed. For some reason meeting Campbell made everything different. I guess it gave me some kind of hope.
After breakfast, Harry pulled into my driveway to drop us off. He had hockey practice to get to as he does every Saturday morning. Before hopping out of the car and leaving Harry alone to go to hockey, I jumped up and gave him the biggest hug.
"What was that?" He exclaimed.
"Just because" I responded with a giggle.
Harry smiled. I looked at both him and Campbell. "This might sound kinda weird especially to you Campbell because I just met you yesterday, but I love you guys. More than anything. More than myself even."
I couldn't believe what I had just said. It's like the words were coming out of my mouth and my brain had no idea.
"I'm sorry that was weird." I said trying to get them both to forget about it.
"You know what Harper Rae I love you too" Harry exclaimed loud and proud.
"And I love you too" Campbell mumbled as he chuckled along.
Campbell and I then got out of the car and I invited Campbell in to hang out. We spent the rest of the day and some of the night talking about life and everything. I even opened up to Campbell about the way I had been feeling for the past year. He understood. I was scared he would think I was a freak and leave, but he was so nice about everything. He gave me a hug and a kiss on the check and told me everything was going to be ok.
"I felt that way once. It was after my dad died when I was 14. I didn't think things were ever going to be different but they are. Life is pretty damn great."
We sat outside on my deck laughing and giggling until it got late and he had to leave. The next day was thanksgiving. Harry's whole family was coming over and my parents invited Campbell and his mom over too. Harry, Campbell, and I all made dinner together. Grace helped a little bit too, but we did all the actual work. Turkey are not easy to cook. After dinner and lots of pie. Harry and his family left. Mrs. Oliver was helping clean up. Campbell and I snuck away to hide from doing dishes. We were in the basement on the couch.
"Ok let's watch "Christmas Vacation." I exclaimed.
"Never seen it" Campbell added.
"National Lampoons? No? Oh my god Campbell it's only the best movie of all time."
So let's just say we ended up watching "Christmas Vacation". Again Campbell stayed later than his mom so I walked him out as usual. This time went a little differently. I guess we lost control of feelings and ended up making out outside of the house. I thought of Harry. I knew Harry didn't feel the same way I felt about him so it seemed like being with Campbell was finally a way of moving on. I really did have feelings for Campbell. Although being with Campbell felt right, I slowly realized I wasn't ready to be with anyone. Not yet. You can't love someone else if you can't love yourself first.
"Right person, wrong time"
I explained that to him and he understood. He left with a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
