With my eyes still closed I felt around my bedside table for my phone. When I felt it in my reach I rubbed my eyes and opened them to the caller id. Immediately I fully woke up and sprouted into a sitting position in my bed. I clicked answer on my phone.
"Harry! I've been trying to call you. Where are you?"
"Harper, something bad has happened, but I was driving home from hanging out with my hockey team. My phone had died. On my way home I saw his car all wrecked up in a ditch on the side of 62. Luckily I got a car to stop and call 911."
Harry was speaking faster and faster. My head started to ache in pain. Everything was a blur. Harry's voice was toned out by the rioting thoughts inside my head.
"I don't know if he's breathing or not. I have no idea what happened, but called 911 already."
The phone dropped from my hand. I screamed out, balling crying at the top of my lungs.
"Harper! It'll be ok! Hello? Answer me!" The phone speaker spoke.
I realized Harry was still on the phone. My parents rushed in to calm me down and took my phone and began talking to Harry. Harry explained what he had seen to them. They called Campbell's mom and told me to stay with my sister and left in a hurry. Unable to get up from my bed in shock, I couldn't fight them on making me stay home. Grace came in after my parents left and had no idea what was going on. I was still screaming and crying and she sat there next to me, arm around me until sunrise when we heard the garage door opening.
"Harper?" A voice screamed from downstairs.
Grace went down to see who it was, I still sat on my bed staring at the wall. I heard Grace talking.
"Oh hey. She's up in her room if you want to go to talk to her. I've been sitting up there with her for hours. She hasn't said one word."
I heard footsteps coming up the stairs and saw Harry appear in the door frame. I saw him and before I could even get up, he ran over to my bed and laid down holding me tightly. I appreciated the company, but no about of love right now was going to help me feel better. Grace brought up two cups of coffee for Harry and I. He thanked her and then asked her to close the door as she left.
"Harp-" Harry tried to talk but I cut him off.
"Is Campbell ok? What happened?"
Harry stayed silent and sighed.
"Harry!" I screamed out at the top of my lungs.
"Campbell must have been in a hit and run incident. When the cops showed up he was rushed to the hospital. He wasn't breathing."
"No there must be some mistake. Maybe it wasn't Campbell, just someone who looked like him and had his same car." I babbled on, giving myself the slightest bit of hope.
"Harper. Campbell's dead." Harry exclaimed.
Instead of balling out crying, I had a different reaction. It was like I couldn't cry or scream or talk. My heart was so empty and broken that it was incapable of showing any emotion at all. At first I thought I was dreaming or dead. Unfortunately I realized I wasn't after I heard Harry's voice.
"Hey listen it's going to be ok."
"I'm sorry Harry as much as I would like to believe that one of my two best friends has died. He fucking died. So I'm sorry if I sound grumpy and a little bit annoyed. If it's too much for you to handle, you can just leave me alone."
He said nothing. He didn't leave me alone like I had angrily told him too. He stayed holding me. Harry knew I hadn't meant it, he knew I needed him. My eyes closed and I fell asleep after being so exhausted from crying. I awoke by myself in bed.
