(The next idea was suggested to me by @kurokotsujisan , thank you so much!)
I complained,"How much bruckles do we have?"
Sam started to count the few bruckles in his hand,"Twenty."
"Let's just do one more house- that should be enough," I grumbled as I cleaned off all the grass off my brown hat.
I still was thinking about seeing Rachel, I haven't seen her in years- and I couldn't explain why I pretended Sam and I were dating. I guess I didn't want Rachel to see me as this lonely loser, like everyone else in this town does. I felt so stupid, Sam probably thought I was a freak. What's wrong with me?
Sam knocked on the door to the next and final house. After a moment or two, the door opened, but there was nothing there.
"Hello?" I asked.
I heard a voice call,"Hey! What can I do for you two?"
I looked down and saw a short, petite woman.
"Oh- well we were just wondering if you'd be interested in exchanging bruckles for yardwork?" I asked.
The woman was about to answer when she did a double take as her eyes glanced over to Sam. I was confused for a second as her facial expression completely changed.
She smiled sweetly,"Oh, of course! Although, why do you two handsome boys need bruckles anyways?"
"We're just traveling," Sam replied cheerfully.
This woman was starting to weird me out- I'm not one of those people to trust my gut, but I couldn't quite explain it...The way she was looking at Sam, well, it gave me this weird feeling in my stomach. What if she was one of those serial killers? Those still exist, right?
The woman nodded,"I'm Angelina, what's your name?"
"I'm Sam, nice to meet ya," Sam held his hand out for her to shake.
"I'm Guy," I mumbled.
Angelina shook Sam's hand for longer than I liked, completely ignoring me.
"Why don't you two come inside? It must get so exhausting doing all that hard yardwork all day," Angelina said as she ran her fingers through her yellow fur.
I blurted out,"We're good, there's no need."
Angelina's head snapped over towards me as she gave me the dirtiest look. I rolled my eyes. She was going to have to do better than that.
"Guy's right, we wouldn't want to be trouble," Sam insisted.
Angelina looked over towards Sam, regaining her cheerful composure.
"Although I do very much admire a gentleman," Angelina put her hand on Sam's shoulder,"I do insist. A strong guy like you needs a break occasionally, too."
I could see Sam slightly shrink away from her touch, while awkwardly laughing quietly.
My face started to get all hot and sweaty, who did this woman think she was?
"He said no," I spat out without even thinking about what I was saying.
Angelina's eyes locked with mine as her eyebrows furrowed,"What's your problem? I was simply trying to be nice."
"Yeah," I responded sarcastically,"You're definitely doing this purely out of the kindness from your heart."
Before Angelina could even respond, I grabbed Sam's arm and lead him away. This woman was getting on my nerves.
