You Are Strong

Have you ever known someone,
So truly and so well,
That you can see in an instant,
There are lies in what they tell?
Do you have eyes that can see,
Under the depths of someone' soul,
And can say with just a look,
There's some demon they're struggling to control?
Are your ears so keen and sharp,
That they hear voices cold and hot,
So much that when someone says they're fine,
It's clear that they're not?
Is your heart so pure and kind,
That the perfect words roll right off your tongue,
And you can understand the misunderstood,
When they truly have no one?
But no,you can't hear their pain,
You cannot understand their hearts,
Because as much as you try to comfort them,
They're a million miles afar.
But who made them this way,
Into desperate creatures escaping the past,
Who're so afraid of living this life,
Any moment could be their last?
It was us who failed to notice,
Because we were so caught up in our own mess,
Too self-centered to realize,
There was somebody who needed our help
So choking back tears and forcing a smile,
They put on their happy masks,
Anything to avoid answering
The questions everyone seems to ask
And now on the rare occasion we meet them,
It's no wonder they look so calm,
It's a thing they've learned to disguise,
Because they cannot hold off such a big storm,
But I think they finally realized,
They should let themselves breathe,
And let somebody else fix the wounds,
That come with a heart that feels so deep,
But often the world and its people are unfair,
To those who come out a little rough,
Thinking their brokenness shows they're weak,
When it's clearly anything but
Because strength isn't something you can measure,
But surely you can see that somebody is strong,
If they can keep a smile lingering on their face,
Even if the whole world has turned against them now.
